How could i use a half-diminished chord?

The title is pretty much self-explanetory for the overall point of this thread

as a progressive songwriter, im always trying to try new things and expand my musical abilities, physical and musical (mainly musical), so ive been wondering for a long time:

when are good times to use half diminished chords and sound good? i want to use them, but i dont want to force them into chord progressions or riffs. i want them to be more natural

if it helps at all, my main preference in genre is melodic progressive metal, but i do play other things like smooth jazz and acoustic music
