Martis93, I understand you might feel a bit ganged-up on right now, but I think MOST of the people are trying to be helpful.

The thing about your amp is...well...one of the idiosyncrasies of UG. More tuan any other guitar site I visit, the posters here are VERY amp conscious. And opinionated. In fact, telling someone they need a better amp has become a bit of a meme here, suggested in jest.

In this case, though, I think they're just trying to help you plot for your future.

A second 7-string could be very good for you to have. If nothing else, its a backup. But the consensus seems to be developing that you might get better value by upgrading your amp right now as opposed to buying a guitar.

In my case? My long-time participation in wargaming and role playing games- not the computer ones, the über-nerdy tabletop ones.

It got mentioned in passing, and I could immediately sense a change in attitude.

Nevermind that Napoleon was a wargamer, or that wargaming and RPGs are major hobbies among modern American soldiery and their families, and all the other positives gained by participation. In the USA, it's a negative strike in many fields.

If you were on my friends list you wouldn't be by now.

Just kidding! I've been known to play Arkham with my RPG loving buddy.

Yeah, anything that can make you seem like a nerd is pretty much frowned upon in most jobs, including engineering. For some odd reason, just being good at engineering isn't good enough any more: you have to me mr. Super popular as well...

This thread is all over the place

To answer your original questions TS
1. Just buy the one 7 string for now, you could always trade it.
2. No they don't differ much in feel or playability, you should feel no unsual effects when switching between a 6 and a 7.

Is there any male born since 1930 who hasn't, at some point, played Warhammer or a similar game?

You would be surprised, the amount of funny looks I get when I proudly bust out my Tau army, or ask if we can go into Games Workshop when I'm out with friends in the city centre. The ex girlfriend.....its probobly a good job I had some guitars to distract her! and a penis.

I have a theory on that. Wargames, Fantasy RPG's etc. are generally enjoyed by folks with a competent intellect and a vidid imagination coupled with the ability to think in multiple dimensions and timeframes and quickly weigh actions and consequences, examine ROI and make fact based decisions.

Stupid people hate that.

As to the TS's concerns, yes we can be harsh and it is most certainly true that we often answer questions that weren't even asked. It's also true that there are some that simply revel in giving people a hard time.

Ignore all that...or better yet, come on board and get involved, because for all the dysfunction here, there's a wealth of knowledge amongst the crap.

Two rules:

1. Don't take the BS personally.
2. It's (almost) all BS.

i think this was brought up before. if you want to make a living off of guitar, your best bet would be teaching lessons or being a session guitarist.

i teach four students now (i dont have a lot of time during the day). $25 per half hour. nets $400 a month, predictable and lasting (provided you are doing what you are doing. and in the last three years of teaching i myself have learned much from teaching them. but if you teach 10 students its $1000. some gigs and you it could supplement your income from something else. i keep my music money separate than my other money. that is what i buy gear from.

i know a guy who lives off of music, he does open mics at a big bar where he gets paid, and he has a weekly spot friday and saturday where he gigs at big bars, and he maintains like 10 lawns on the side. he gets by, but i don't think much more than that.
