On an interview I saw he said he thought Tube amps sounded "too warm". It's one the reasons his tone is so... let's say... unique...

It sounded like a broken chainsaw.

It actually makes sense...

There was a guy with a chainsaw at some point, he cut down a tree and sawed off some wooden planks, sent it to Dean, they made a guitar out of it, and then Dime made it sound like the chainsaw that cut that wood.

Dimebag was a saint to wood everywhere.

I may not like the tone in itself, but i wouldn't have it any other way to be honest.
Take Domination for example, between the riff, the solo and the breakdown...it's the classic chainsaw sound with some flanging, but it sounds perfect all the way through.
I don't know, i see the "warmth" in tubes that Dime talks about as some kind of a blunt edge, although that's not to say you can't get it with the right gear i suppose.

He started using Krank Amp's after Pantera split.

He said they had a good balance between warmth and buzz saws.

And Tubes sound great distorted... that's why people use them.

Tubes do sound great... but not for Pantera-style music. Dime wanted & needed to get that "cut" that SS amps give when the mid's are virtually non-existent.

It really depends what you're aiming for and what your context is, i would never say one is better than the other.

Yeah, I agree. Dimebag Darrell will be sadly missed.

Dammit, it's taken me 5 years to realise that my (expensive as hell) CD version of Power Metal is a bootleg. Still, who cares... It sounds like the real thing and remains the only pre-CFH album I'll ever listen to, since I can't stand the first 3.

Get'cha pull, fanboys!
