Who should I listen to?

I've been finding it harder and harder to find bands/songs that I really like. Here's a little bit about my taste:

I like (in no particular order):

Led Zeppelin - probably my favorite band: really like their work, but it's not exactly the genre that I would think I would listen to (hard to explain)

Van Halen - their 80's songs

Guns n' Roses - some of their 70's/80's stuff

Queen - some of their stuff

RATT - some of their stuff

I'm not sure if you can really bunch all of that together into one genre.

Also, I've got a thing for video game music if that means anything. Pretty much everything composed by Koji Kondo (Zelda, Mario, etc.). It's probably because I like more complex music, songs that are creative and fun.

So, anyone have any suggestions? Just throw anything that might help at me.

Anyway, I was going to say;

Well, Led Zep and Van Halen are rifftastic, so I think it's safe to say you like a good guitar riff. Soundgarden, Queens of the Stone Age, Rage Against the Machine, anything Jack White related (White Stripes, Raconteurs, Dead Weather), Tool (they have a cool No Quarter cover) are too, so you might enjoy those.

Queen had sweet vocal melodies and harmonies. Why not go deep into the Beach Boys?

Oh right... I wasn't around back then and I haven't really looked into the specifics. I just estimated based on the fact that glam metal (which many describe GnR as) started in the late 70's.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'll be sure to look into all of them.

Them Crooked Vultures certainly fit the criteria. Cool riffs, fairly complex, and fun and creative. Also John Paul Jones.

You'd probably like The Black Keys, Minus The Bear, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Alter Bridge too.

Queens of the Stone Age/Kyuss

As for your game music stuff, look into Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill series) and some of the stuff from the Metal Gear Solid seris

I'm recommending you some artists/bands that don't fall into the classic rock category, but that I'm pretty sure that you'll like because of the characteristics they have in common with the bands you listed (abstraction, i'm not arguing). Give them a try.

Tasty solos, different influences :

The White Stripes - Ball And Biscuit | Elephant

John Frusciante - Anne | Curtains

Sublime - Ebin | 40 oz. to Freedom

More complex, strong feeling

The Mars Volta - Cicatriz ESP | De-Loused in the Comatorium

Al Di Meola - The Wizard | Land of the Midnight Sun (skip to minute 5:00)

Frank Zappa - Son of Mr. Green Genes | Hot Rats (skip to minute 1:10)

I'm suggesting you to skip because it's 70's jazz fusion (read rock with a hint of jazz) and you might to get a wrong impression at first. You should also give a try to bands like Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and to other genres like jazz with guitar(My Funny Valentine by Bill Evans&Jim Hall, Minor Swing by Django Reinhadrt...).

If you like Guns N Roses try Slash's solo albums. Some very good stuff there, and Myles Kennedy's vocals kick ass! Speaking of Myles Kennedy, Alter Bridge are a cracking band with some incredible songs. Their song Blackbird was voted by one guitar magazine to have the greatest guitar solo ever. Ever! To me thats a strong statement but it is a show stopper, and judging by GNR, Led Zep and Van Halen, you'd appreciate good solos. Mark Tremonti and Kennedy are great guitarists! If you're up for something heavier Tremonti's recent solo album is also very very good, his riffing is truly spectacular! Hope you enjoy!
You just know he's hiding something awesome under there...
