"The Best" appears to be Jawbreaker.

There are a few other bands on the European Continent that you might not have heard of.

Captain Everything - They describe themselves as 'Bubblegum Thrash'. Take whatever you want from that, but they are strongly recommended. They play some very fast songs with great pop sensibilities and occasionally dip into ska.

Recommended Tracks - My Life As an Alan Smithee, Rocket Science, The Problem with Numbers, Prince Charming

Zatopeks - Not pop-punk in the vein that you might you associate with the genre, especially as they are strongly influenced by Buddy Holly. Generally they are lyrically better than their peers with some of the slower songs and their faster songs are still catchy as hell

Recommended tracks - Scum on the River, Death and the Hobo, Turkish Bread Chronicles, CountryYard Blues

[I've tabbed a few of those songs if you are interested - Shameless plug over]

20 Belows - Standard pop-punk stuff, with an emphasis on catchy riffs.

Recommended tracks - Message, This Boy's Giving Up, One More Round

The Apers - If you like Screeching Weasel, you'll like The Apers

There are a few American bands that are currently on my playlist. The Zoinks, Eesch and the Challenged.

Give them a listen and tell me what you think.

I have a soft spot for early Mayday Parade, wouldn't recommend them in this thread, though. They're definitely not 'essentials.' Or pop-punk really.

Damn, I only just noticed "essential" in the thread now.
One in the morning roaming the internet doesn't help whatsoever.
