80s hair metal setup questions
Looking for a good late 80s hair band tone. I have commonly found two answers to this either a Marshall JCM 800/900/2000 setup or a rack setup using an ADA MP1 into a power amp such as a MosValve. I am wondering if one way or the other is more preferable or some combination of the two.
Thanks |

JCM800 would likely be best. or a JCM900SLX would work.
honestly if you want good JCM800 tones, buy a Splawn Quickrod ($1000 used) which are EL34. i have a very similar model the promod(KT88's), as well as more of a metal geared amp the Nitro (KT88). splawns are made in the USA in Dallas, north Carolina. i think they have around five guys and they put out probably 5 amps out a week (at least at one point). Scott splawn (the owner) backs it and will take personal calls if you have a question or something. i have spoken to him twice. he is a good guy.

80s hair metal was either a JCM800, or a Soldano SLO.
In most cases, it was the SLO, but a 800 will do a great job as well. Long story short, get a 800 2203/2204

Lots of options there, I would just add some not mentioned yet:
Peavey 5150 ( very 80s if you're into VH), Butcher Laney AOR Sansamp PSA-1 preamp into tube power amp, such as Carvin, Peavey 50/50, maybe even mosfet.

5150 is much too American voiced for the standard glam tone.

Lots of great options listed above. It depends too...are you after the British sound or the "Brown" sound? Don't forget that you can use some effects to help hone in on some great 80s sounds. Chorus, delay, just to name a couple.

A non modified JCM800 2203 or 2204 doesn't come with an effects loop, so no delay or modulation effects for him
Rack solution would be better for that application. |

Depends what type of hair metal you want. Personally for me my favourite tones are Skid Row, White Lion, Extreme (all ADA MP1) so going the rack route was a no brainer and I wouldn't change it for anything. Plus who doesn't like a fridge of flashing lights behind them!

^ yeah. normally it's either hotrodded marshall, soldano, or the ada route (which i haven't tried, i should stress, I haven't messed with rackmounted stuff). it's really a matter of trying those and taking your pick, i guess.

Basically, it's all been said. The main glam tones were on a Soldano SLO, JCM800 or ADA MP1. If you're talking Van Halen, I would definitely buy a EVH 5150 III 50w. For the rest, if you're on a budget, go JCM800 or JCM900 SL/X. If you have the money, nothing beats a SLO. If you want a more SLO tone, Jet City will get you what you want. The JCA100HDM would be the best option for a cheap SLO tone.
I don't know anything about rack systems like the ADA, so I'm not the person to ask here, either.

5150 (the original) is a modded SLO if not mistaken, where Eddie wanted more gain.
I have an ADA MP-1 and honestly the Sansamp PSA-1 is a lot better, the ADA barely got used live. I paired it with a Peavey Classic 50/50, which is a knockoff of the Mesa Power amp 50:50. Since the Peavey is discontinued the only affordable tube power amp I know of now is the Carvin TS100: https://www.carvinguitars.com/produ...p?product=TS100 As far as swtching - you can get an old midi switch (used), like the Rolls Midi Buddy works good, or one of the new ones by Behringer or other manufacturers.

See, JCM8000 is okay, but I would rather have a JCM that was over 9000
