Hello friends. I have been eyeing the ZVex Box of Rock for some time now and would like some clarifications before making the plunge.

Will distortion pedals sound similar through different amplifiers? For example, if I run a distortion pedal through a Fender amp and a Marshall amp, with both on clean channels, will the sound produced be similar in tone or will the effect vary with the amp.

Also, are there any other distortion/boost combo pedals similar to the Box of Rock? I only know of the Suhr Koko Boost and Fulltone Fulldrive 2 in addition to the Box of Rock.

the amp/speakers/cabinet/guitar will affect how the pedal sounds a lot.

i'd need to look up with the BOR is to see if there's anything similar which is easily available. don't really have time tonight, will do it tomorrow if you give this thread a bump.

They will vary with the amp, yes. The Box of Rock works well with Fenders like the Hot Rod Deluxe, Pro Jr, and Blues Jr. Not sure about how it works with Marshalls or others. It's kind of a JTM45 in a box. Does a pretty good job too I think...at least from the perspective of someone who's never played a real cranked JTM45 (that's for Cathbard ).

Fulldrive 2 is also a nice pedal. I have a Carl Martin Plexitone that has a boost as well as two overdrive stages.

Check Wampler out. They have some of the Best overdrives i've ever encountered!!! They are pricey but so are Zvex. Zvex pedals have this wierd fuzzy nasaley quality which some people love or hate. But check the tube for some of Wamplers pedals. I think you will like. Or the Amptweaker TightDrive

And yes they will sound a little different because of there construction and speaker type. Plus your eq will make all the diff as well.

OH yes Carl Martin is bad to the bone dude. Great pedal. Ugly.....but great.

And JTM45 is like O...M....G fully cranked BTW.

That Carl Martin Plexidrive sounds very nice, but is a bit on the large side. As for the Wampler pedals, I'm looking for a pedal with two buttons for a boost and distortion. If I had the tools and skill, I would love to build my own pedals. However, I have no experience with a soldering iron and lack a steady hand.

What about a distortion pedal through an SS amp and a tube amp? Does that have tonal differences as well?

may be a little different form of Rock type, but how would a catalingred DLS be? they are a marshall in a box for the most part. i don't know how it would be different with fenders and marshalls, but again a lot of pedals are voiced for pretty much anything. ex, tubescreamers, wahs, etc.

I found the DLS lacking in high-mids bite that Marshalls are easily identifiable by. Granted, through tweaking it could probably sound good, but I second Wampler. The Plextortion is an amazing pedal. The JHS Pedals Charlie Brown is worth a look, too.

EDIT:

Yes, because they're different amps. Tube amps aren't inherited being "better" than SS amps, they just sound different model to model, and not all of them work with pedals the same way.

I thought the distortion comes from the pedal and not the amp when using a pedal turn a clean channel into distortion. So by this logic, wouldn't the choice of amp make a small difference in sound when comparing the tones of each amp through the pedal, especially if the pedal is designed to emulate another amp?

Clean amps have their own tones too. Think of them as spices. Adding distortion, whether it's from the amp or from a pedal, is adding another spice. Some spices go well together, some don't.
