It doesn't look like a real one to me. Headstock doesn't seem to be shaped correctly, and the knob/switch placement seems peculiar. I could be totally wrong but it doesn't seem legit to me.

To me, it looks like one of the old models, before Gibson threatened to sue them for copyright.

says ESP on the headstock, but he says it's "a great example of what an LTD should be".

i'm sure LTD would agree.

I agree, pre-lawsuit model for sure. Assuming it's real, I have no idea.

The things I would do for a pre-lawsuit ESP EX....

Yep looks pre-lawsuit to me especially with that Gisbonesque hockey stick headstock, freaking love that headstock. As an Explorer owner I approve and would highly suggest buying!

I may not be too much into ESP/LTD's but, isn't there supposed to be a serial number on the back of the headstock, 'cause there's none on the neck plate.
I've seen a few fakes on sites including youtube, and that looks like a fake fitted with Emg's.

So IMO, I think he bought it off a Chinese website for a couple hundred bucks knowing it was fake, but just added name brand tuners and pickups too make more cash.

Or perhaps he's just one of those people that adds the LTD to it not knowing any better. thinking that the company is actually ESP/LTD.

Could just be ignorance, but fake is possible.

I think anyone who would pay for an actual ESP would know the difference between LTD and ESP. That alone makes it seem shady.

Headstock looks wrong after looking at some pics. It should be more round at the end, not pointy like this one. You should ask the guy for the serial number and the model number.

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but the neck plate on that has ESP stamped on it, isn't having ESP stamped on the neck plate something reserved only for LTDs?

+1

There is usually a Standard Series or marking along those lines stamped on back with the serial number and country of origin (Japan), at least on the ESP's I've seen and played

I wouldn't go for it. Seems kind of sketch.

If it was real, it would be an ESP MX-250, or a similar model in that vein. ESP did make Explorer copies like that, pre-lawsuit and all that good stuff.

Problem is, ESP made legit copies, and that has a bolt on neck, like a very cheap copy would. I think the LTD MX models did have bolt on neecks, but the headstock on it says ESP.

It's possible it's legit, there are a bunch of weird ESP/LTD models that were produced for very short amounts of time and fall through the cracks of common knowledge, but I'd personally be apprehensive and give it a pass.

Didn't ESP in the 90s have a line similar to what the LTD line is now, which was largely composed of guitars with bolt-on necks?
That would explain the bolt-on neck on that one, the guitar's dated look, and his comparison to LTDs.
(I'm not saying I think this is legit, I have no idea, it's just food for thought)
