Tremolo picking dillema

Hi,

I currently use a Gibson super light guage set on my LTD M-50. Now, whenever I tremolo pick, the pattern gets erratic sometimes. It feels like the string is stretching a little too much when I pick it. So, when I make the second pass over the string, it feels like I am moving in the same direction as the string (Sorry, but I don't know how else to describe this).

Now, I am not sure if its my technique or the string is a little too slack. I try not to pick too wide in order to avoid picking the next string.

Any advice?

Well there's basically no reason not to try going up a gauge and seeing how that works out for you. Try that and then see what happens, you might find that you like the beefier strings anyway.

This.

Try some 9's or maybe 10's, they hold up more to tremolo picking, probably. Otherwise, try a new set of your current gauge.

Heavier strings or a lighter pick. I know exactly what you're talking about when you say the pick string is stretching too much or the pick "catches" on it. More tension will help that, or a lighter pick will glide over the strings more easily.

I do A LOT of very fast tremelo picking and I've found that having relatively heavy strings for my tuning and a heavy pick works for me. You're basically barely hitting the string with just the tip of the pick so that it doesn't "grab" the string.

I'm having the same problem. I'm currently using 9-46 strings on Ibanez RG470AHZ NTF.
Would changing the string gauge from 9-46 to 10-52 be too radical transition?
