I don't know who's the most underrated, but I think Ian Moore is worth checking out if you like blues and I'd say he's considerably underrated.

He grew up in blues clubs following his dad's band around and learned the craft and can really play the sht out of his guitar and is quite a good song writer on piano too. His blues has a bit of gospel thrown in... so as you might expect it has unfortunately had an impact on his fan base... but he's a great guitar player.

Really I think you guys are on to something with Kirk... way too much wah. I don't even like new Metalica, but I love the old stuff... Kirk is still a good guitar player.

I would like to say that there is a sort of paradox with the person that I think is the most overrated... because he's also one of the most underrated too in some ways... the reason I say this is because he's one of the greatest rhythm guitar players ever... but man is he sad when he plays lead guitar... it's always the same old sht... that's why he has somebody else helping him out... thank god for Ron Wood.

I'm speaking of Keith Richards of course. People think of the Rolling Stones as a great band (and they are), but they rarely hale Keith Richards as a guitar "god" because of his inability to play lead guitar, but man... that cat comes up with some of the coolest riffs and rhythm progressions ever... yep, he's a great guitar player AND a really bad guitar player at the same time...

I realize Keith and Ron have there own way of sharing the guitar parts to get a really good sound, but Hendrix did his own weaving

I just think Keith Richards is really good and really bad at the same time.

Kirk Hammett
His solos have been the same old boring pentatonic wah wank since god knows when. He did have some decent solos on the older albums though, but I feel he hasn't developed as a guitarist since the early days AT ALL.

Synyster Gates
Some kids in my school (and youtube people) treat him as a guitar god, where he clearly isn't. He isn't terrible but isn't that great too.

Alexi Laiho
Not a bad guitarist, sloppy at times, but definitely not as good as people make him out to be.

Dimebag Darrell
Probably overrated because he died.

Overrated: Jimmy Page, Angus Young, John Frusciante, John Pertrucci (only a little bit thought), Synyster Gates, and the guys from Arch Enemy.

Underrated: Sam Totman, Roope Latvala, James Hetfeild, Zacky Vengeance, and Synyster Gates

The reason I put Syn twice is because he's overrated in some places (dumbass teenage girls) and really underrated in others (i.e. a lot of the people on UG)

Nels Cline is hugely underrated. If people know him, they know him from his work with Wilco (which is great), but if you listen to any of his solo stuff, he's an amazing player. He's got amazing chops without sacrificing feeling and he is very versatile while at the same time having an instantly identifiable style. He does a lot of avant-jazz so he hasn't really gotten the notice he but he is one of the most creative and interesting guitarists out there today and he deserves more notice then he gets. I'm not going to lie, Syn is the whole reason I started playing guitar, and he's on of my personal favorites, but no way is he underrated. There are a lot of guitarist that don't get as much credit as him when they really deserve it.
