My amp is a POD 2 into a PA speaker. The funny thing is, that's a HUGE LEAP better than what I used to have. I feel like a lot of people on here are very tone-snobbish. Sometimes I barely think a band I likes tone is better. Are people just nit-picky, or have my ears not yet come to recognize the differences in quality?

I am 100% happy with my Laney. I would have a Rockerverb or Sunn O))) Model T Reissue or a custom Big Crunch if I could afford it but the Laney will do. Fit in just about any genre or band if you tweak a boost and the gain stages right.

My EVH is wonderful.

But my half-working Peavey isn't.

Just me then haha.

I'm actually seriously considering going the route of getting a clean amp and running distortion pedals for all my dirty needs haha. Totally undecided as of yet though, I may just end up with a Laney like you Stig, the VH's look really nice, my favourite band used them, and both of the other guitarists in my band are running GL's (the 50 and the 100 versions) so I may as well jump on the band wagon haha.

To be honest the only thing that's really annoying me about my amp is that, since it's a GH50L, it doesn't have a clean channel. But I think I can actually fix that with a simple ABY pedal; I have a similarly powered combo that I like the clean tones of enough for now at least

Thing about pedals though, I've never ever managed to find a pedal that could replicate the sounds I like about my favourite amps, I don't know why! I feel like if Fractal or Line6 or someone put their better amp models in to a pedal it would be doable but since no one has... meh. Even my Suhr Riot doesn't really do what I thought it would... it's still good but it's not quite what I was expecting.

I don't know if any of you guys have any particular pedals you're thinking of or anything though, maybe ones I've never used

Getting metal out of a pedal has always been a miss... Sound needs to come from a modeler or a real high gain amp, it seems.

ive heard too many good things about the Laney vh100r that im settled on getting that. just debating on getting a guitar first or not. tough choices!

I too have been wondering about just using a good pedal for high gains but have yet to hear of one that can do that job like we want it to. I see bogner makes an uberschall pedal for like $200+ but that's a little too pricey of an experiment for me.

The Marshall Jackhammer is decent. But for the most part if you want good tone out of a pedal you need a preamp like a Uberschall, Verellen makes nice ones too for the Meatsmoke and Skyhammer.

Blackstar make some great high gain pedals. I forget what they're called exactly, HTs or something.

And there's the Wampler Triple Wreck (or something like that). A pedal version of the Mesa Triple Rec. And the Okko dominator. And Toneczar - Openhaus.

All pretty expensive for pedals, but sound like they'd be pretty good options.

so I finally go to pull the trigger on the laney vh100R at zzounds and they have no more new ones (so no pay-as-you-play monthly payments) and they won't be getting any new ones either! I think either amazon or MF also didn't have any more in stock so I guess it's getting discontinued? D: found a JSX for cheap and am waiting to hear back about it. Ippon would be proud of me

How about these? AMS seems to support payments on non-new in box product.

I bought mine used. I don't think they've been in production since the Ironheart came out, and any sold new after that were just new old stock. Worth searching around a bit to find one. I don't think they have any notorious reliability issues, so the most you'll need to do is pop in a new set of tubes. I blew a screen resistor on mine but that's only because it didn't take to the hot bias I put on it very well, so I had them replaced and biased it normally.

The issue is that people often say something like you need a valve amp for high gain sounds and that pedals are no good, but completely ignore the fact that you can get valve pedals. Some of these are even fully fledged preamps...

On that note, I should be getting an AMT SS-11B tomorrow

But does a distortion pedal with a couple of preamp tubes inside it compare to the thunderous roar of a 5150 or Rectifier?

Not really. Plate voltage on them is usually crap.

I think it's important to consider that the preamp stages of a 5150 or dual rectifier have the potential to be cased in a pedal format with identical circuits to the original. Also, there are plenty of tube pedals that use a high voltage range. Speaking from an engineering point of you, it is also possible to design effective starved plate circuitry, although I don't know of any pedals designed in this way.

Yea, can't go wrong with the VH100R or JSX. Snagged the VH100R for a stupid price from HC a while back and the JSX can be had for ~500 all day long.

You could've gotten the Mesa Royal Atlantic for 1100 new when GC closed them out. I spammed various threads then.

I've noticed that the Mesa Stilettos are going for stupid prices right now.
