Eating plants is cool because, despite being a living thing like you and me and my dogs, they're neither sentient nor conscious. And meat is a second-level nutrient -- I mean you can easily get by w/out eating meat, but I'd imagine it's hella difficult to live life w/out eating meat or vegetation.

We're so much better than plants because, on top of being sentient and conscious (much like our animal brethren), we're also moral agents. Well, most of us are, anyway.

Oh that's kind of neat. I sort of know what you mean, because years ago I guess I was in a sorta similar place (not w/ The Smiths though).

I'm a devastated and angst-ridden kind of guy. \m/

Joy Division's another band I wanna delve into. I've already heard both of their albums, but I've not given them much more than a cursory listen.

I'm also kind of attracted by the fact that they only had two albums. It doesn't seem too overwhelming to get into them, know what I mean?

I think four or so albums (plus singles, splits, etc.) is basically the perfect discography length. Incidentally, The Smiths and Jawbreaker both fit this incredibly arbitrary and pointlessly shallow criterion. It kind of annoys me when bands have a ton of albums, especially when lots of them aren't that great. But even if their entire output is solid, I'm still slightly put off, albeit not nearly as much. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah it's hard to get into long-lived bands that don't have a "classic era" or something.

I luv Joy Division, as my last.fm charts can attest. In addition to the two studio albums, though, Substance is essential listening.

Yeah, that's why I've never really delved into The Fall.

anyone into the troy tate sessions? it's been my go-to smiths album recently. i hope it gets a legit release at one point if that's even possible, 'cuz underneath the bootleg quality, i think the production is pretty nice and preferred to their actual debut.

I listen to The Peel Sessions EP quite a lot. Never heard of Troy Tate or his sessions.

it's the first version of their debut that was scrapped--from different sources i gather it was either due to being shitty or for political reasons. produced by troy tate (naturally). it's got some songs that don't appear elsewhere, which is cool.

The Peel Sessions recording of "What Difference Does it Make" from Hatful of Hollow is superior to the album version, 'cuz it rocks, but I do not like the alternate versions of the other tracks.

the production on the debut is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooo distracting to me, and i'm usually down with awful production. i prefer the album version of "this charming man" the hatful cut, but other than that hatful of hollow versions take the cake.
