Slide exercises
Hello all,
I was wondering if any of you had any tips, tricks, or exercises specifically for slide players. I've dabbled in it in the past, to the point that I was able to learn to play Tush by ZZ Top, but never really felt comfortable doing so in front of others. If anyone knows anything they could share, or any links to lessons, etc etc, that would be awesome. Thanks.

Just get a feel for the notes and how to slide between semi notes and work on muting behind the slide with another finger.

That all sounds really amazing and awfully helpful, but alas I'm a bit of an idiot and a noob at the slide. I've been playing for six years and only recently learned how to get clean vibrato out of a slide. Any specific practices or techniques?

Basic stuff:
First, you must damp the strings behind the slide to avoid extraneous noises. Most folks use the index finger for this, just lightly rest it on the strings. Second, make sure the slide is placed directly over the fret, not before it as if you were actually fretting the note. It's best to use a guitar with the action raised a bit, and heavier strings. Otherwise, you'll be whacking your frets a lot with the slide. Things to practice.... Accurately moving from fret to fret, sliding "into" a note and also sliding from note to note, all while maintaining a good tone. Develop a clear, steady vibrato. Vibrato is paramount for slide technique; Bob Brozman recommends "hanging your hand freely from the thumb on the guitar neck, to get a nice, free back-and-forth movement. Good luck! |
