the sun doesn't set here (or well, it doesn't get dark) until closer to 11pm around the longest day EDIT: granted, that's scant consolation for our weather with what our weather normally is (total overcast cloud cover if not outright rain) it might as well get dark at 8pm.

problem is in the winter it's only light between about 9am and 4pm. that sucks.

Why? Because Berlin is the heroin capital of Europe? Or are they unable to drive and routinely treat people like crap, just like New Yorkers?

I guess that Mr. Tam will be getting you Rosetta Stone in German for Christmas.

If it's dark then you can put a light on, if it's bright then you have to deal with it.

If it's cold then you can put more layers on, of it's too hot then you're ****ed.

Hence why cold and dark is the best. If only there was no SAD.

If it is bright, you can wear sunglasses. If it is too hot, you can turn on the air conditioner.

More people freeze to death than die of heatstroke, and more people get hit by cars when it is dark than they do when it is light.

Lots of people are afraid of the dark. Only Vampires are afraid of the light.

I enjoy cold and dark nights only during the Christmas season (not that we have a lot of such nights out here in La La Land). I very much prefer hot summer nights. I have always viewed cold weather as a punishment from God.

Cold and rainy is why I live in NorCal. Well before the drought that is...

Berliners are a bit curt and short when dealing with people. They also have a low tolerance for small talk that goes beyond the usual German adversion. Depite the lack of English speaking people up north, they generally seem much more open to talking to foreigners. Of course, if I had to deal with some of the ugly Americans I've seen in the past week, I'd be adverse to talking to Americans as well.

Ragtime was indeed a good read.
