MArshall VAlvestate vs265
It has two 100w speakers

Earlier i poster that i was having trouble finding the right tone using my big muff pedal on my modeling amp. Everyone recommended that i get a new amp. So i dug out this one that had been in storage for ten years. Thanks -TK

Sad to say, but you STILL need a new amp.

The valvestate is a Marshall in name only.

A reliable backup amp but apart from that I have nothing nice to say.

In your other thread you asked why you needed the mustang. You need the mustang because the tones you are looking for come from tube amps. The distortion comes from three places in the tube amp 1)pre-amp distortion 2) power amp distortion 3)speaker distortion all three work together to give you that warm/crunchy/thick/whatever tone you are looking for. The valvestate will have a similar problem to the mustang in that the power stage of the amp comes from transistors, not tubes. Transistors square off the sound wave when they reach a certain volume which will just give you tons of nasty top end gain and overall just sound like shit.

EDIT:Forgot to mention that that shit has to be loud to get all of that.

So what you really need is a new amp.
I'd sell the valvestate and upgrade to an entry level tube amp. ie Blackstar, Blackheart, Bugera, Jet City, B-52

Of the recommendations for entry level tube amps two questions. 1. Why entry level? 2. what would you recommend with a 500$ budget.

I am practicing more than jamming however, I would like to be able to play small gigs eventually. Thanks again man

I think he is recommending entry level due to price. I have had good luck with Jet City Amps. Look at their combos if you don't already have a cab. They should be right in your price range.

Entry level just because a good tube amp can run you anywhere from 1-4 grand. Anything from 15-100 watts will give you a loud enough amp to gig with. With tube amps every time you half the wattage you only cut about three decibels of volume, so the difference between a 100 and 25 watts is actually about 6 decibels, amp brand and quality of the speakers will contribute more to your volume than whether or not you have 50 watt or a 100watt. As the dude above me stated, Jet City, I love mine. But if you're looking for metal Blackstar is probably your best bet. And if you don't have a cab, but you got 500$ you can always rig the valvestate as a cab until you can afford one. Although on the musiciansfriend I think the JCA50H is the same price as the JCA 5012 right now.

Well, while we're at it, tell us what tones you are looking for. The whole range you need to cover, and what's most important to you. The more specific you are, the better.

Also tell us where you are located and we'll look up used stuff. 500 bucks is serious amp-money on the used market.

looking for that QOTSA, kyuss, truckfighters etc. tone

then blues such as SRV. Hendrix, Buddy Guy, Santana etc. tone

I am in Boston. I just hate going to GC and getting a million different rushed suggestions from space cadets.

I think Jet City would be right up your alley then, although the Chinese tubes they come with absolutely suck. you might be little bit disappointed immediately after purchase, but a re-tube fixes that.

Tone questing is like climbing mount Everest, and you've just entered the foothills, now that you've got some knowledge it'd be a good idea to just go to GC and try out the stuff that's in your price range and see what you like best. Just ignore the ******s that tell you try out a Marshall MG lol

Well, the Jet City line of amps certainly isn't a wrong place to start for those tones. I also think a Peavey Classic series amp would be a good choice on the cheap. They're less gainy than the JC stuff, and imo do the bluesy stuff more convincingly. You won't nail Santana or SRV with either, but Hendrix should be no problem.
One of the links below is to a Classic 30 head with a matching 2x12"-cab. The big cab sure would help with the Stoner tones. Like most amps in this price range, it would benefit from a speaker-upgrade. The cab's solid, so it's worth upgrading, imo.

There's also this Traynor YCV40:

Not sure it will be right for heavier tones, but the lower-gain tones are nice and it may be worth a look.
