this news weighs incredibly heavy on my heart. donald byrd died this past monday at age 80.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/..._n_2639910.html one of the last of his generation. very sad for his family. very sad for all the musicians/listeners who loved his music. i've seen lou donaldson live and i always wanted to see byrd. maybe in another life. an incredible player. and an amazing writer. he composed some of the most bitching hard bop tunes/records as well as funk fusion. Really is a shame. Great player, was on the first jazz messengers album I heard and I really admire his musicianship.
