i think here (europe?) we mean classical liberals i.e. laissez-faire types whereas they mean more modern liberals (i.e. social democrat types).

i think.

the confusion was used to good effect by the liberal democrats around about the time of the 2010 election.

Here europe yes. So the difference is that in the USA they refer more to attitudes towards social policy whereas here we mean (neo-classical) economic policy?

Yeah, in USA "liberals" are all the dudes going like "I should be free to use guns!" and "I should be free to smoke pot!". Maybe, dunno, didn't really study the American political system.

even nowadays liberalism is still vastly different to leftism in all parts really
