On a FMV circuit, which is the most common for modern tube amps, the circuit inherently cuts midrange and doesn't allow you to push it further than the circuit dictates. The James/Baxandall circuit bypasses this 'weakness'. If you pull the bass and treble back, you increase the midrange beyond unity gain. So if you like the gnarly, crunchy sound of midrange, the James tone stack is fantastic. That's why Orange, Matamp, and Ampeg all became popular with Heavy Rock guys. That midrange was thick, chewy and cut through dense mixes well, while Fender's and even some Marshall amps fell behind slightly. In essence, the James/BAX circuit was active in that you could cut or boost from 12 o'clock when read through an oscilloscope, while an FMV only perceivably boosts frequencies when in actuality it doesn't.

I think that's right. Cathbard and Matt should offer more insight.

This must be the best explanation I've read yet. Thank you very much.

Not right now as it's a mess But once I clear it up I'll post it. I'm gonna replace my EHX Phaser with a Phase 90 at somepoint though!

copied and pasted from WTLT:

ahaha shop here has a sale on. it's one of those "in the shop first, online later" deals, so it's entirely possible what i'm looking at will sell out before i get a chance (assuming i don't chicken out), but I might as well ask now so I can jump on it immediately once the sale does go live online:

mxr phase 90 script with LED: Any good? Guessing it's at least decent, and at least as good as the joyo I have, and it's a fair bit cheaper than usual. Bigger concern is, does it have a DC-in jack for a power supply? I've seen some photos where it has one, and some info where it says it doesn't.

mxr distortion +: any good? I know it's one of the classics, and I've got virtually all of the other classics so I figure it's worth a punt (as long as it's halfway close to the vintage one) just in case I like it, since I tend to like the classic pedals I've tried.

EHX neo mistress: Can it do the Unchained thing? That's basically what I use a flanger for. If it can't do that, I'm not interested. Much like the Phase, I already have the joyo but if this is better (assuming it can do unchained), it'd be worth it since it's half price. Is it even analogue? the EHX site is kind of cagey on that. Not that digital is necessarily bad... but yeah. Considering I already have the joyo which more or less does that tone (just I don't really trust its reliability), there's not much point if it's not suitable for the type of tone I want.

ehx bassballs: i already have the digitech synth wah, but **** it it's half price. it'd let me use a different setting on the digitech, too. dunno how it'll fit on that new/small/cheapo bass pedalboard i just got, but i'll figure that out later

they also have a deluxe memory man and mxr bass fuzz deluxe at ~half price, but the MM is way too big and i'm not sure I like the sound of the bass fuzz (plus I already have a bass muff).

Thanks for any help you can give me

Dave_Mc, the MXR Custom Shop Script Phase 90 is powered by either a 9v battery or dc input as far as I'm aware (checked out pgs to make sure). It's a good phaser for set and forget stuff. Personally I like more flexibility but the sound is classic phaser (think Van Halen). If I'm not mistaken the Joyo is based off the phase 90.

I've never tried it but I always liked the sound of their distortion + in the demos I've seen. I don't see what could go wrong with it.

Instead of the neo mistress I'd go for the MXR flanger. The ehx seems more lush to me while the MXR has a nicer sound with distortion. Also, that's what was used for that song anyway.

Sorry, no experience with the bass balls.

As for the mm, I'd say go for it. It's one of the classic analog delays. Personally I'm not too fond of it because of the size. Also the sound isn't quite there for me yet I like other pedals based on it. I know, weird.

Having said all that, I just wanted to post this:

I can dig it. But it needs moar fuzz and less OD.

Yea, it's pretty good. Keep in mind it's the block logo circuit though, so it won't nail the EVH style tones and will have a much deeper phase than the stock script circuit. And it does have a power jack on the input side.

Not really. The classic is pretty doody stock too. It loses lots of bass as the gain is turned up, but has a full bass response at low gain, so it's not terribly good as a boost and not terribly good as an OD. Probably my least favorite of the classic circuits, TBH, at least stock.

Doesn't do the Unchained thing. It's more spacey and less jet planey.

DMM is the bomb. Buy it. Best analog delay on the planet, IMO.

I'm eventually getting a Zvex Fat Fuzz Factory and considering the Pharaoh can be set to si, ge, or no diode clipping, that's a lot of fuzziness going around. The Elements, Euphoria, and the Crimson Drive (ge od) also get fuzzy in their higher gain settings. Not enough?

I am thinking about pulling out the Timmy though. Last time I played it it sounded a bit brittle. I've got a full list of other pedals I want but don't have the 2k for them haha.
