How they hear your recording.

Do you ever spend hours with good quality studio-phones or monitors, trying to make sure every sound/tone/level/mix/etc is perfect, then cringe at the sight of someone listening to your recording on a $1.50 pair of cell phone ear-phones? is this why so much mainstream stuff is simple garbage with no actual technical musicianship?

It's stupid to say one kind of music is garbage, especially using a vague word like "mainstream".

let's just say, if it still sounds good on a $1.50 pair of cell phone ear-phones, you know you've down your job as an audio engineer right.

what you are saying is indeed true. but good quality monitors are those that give you the best 'true' sound. They don't color your sound to make it better. they simply give you the try sound with no coloration. This way if you know how your speakers work, you can do a perfect mix that translates to any audio system be it car audio or cheap headphones or really good hifi system.

That has nothing to do with mainstream

mainstream is just a word often used to refer to what the mass media is throwing down our throats at this point in time. I agree it is subjective, you may enjoy the amount of hype and plays Bieber, One Direction and Lil'wayne get while I prefer to listen to less current artists like Hendrix and SRV... I'd happily let MTV, E!, and any other mass media outlets force me to listen to new blues kings and virtuoso's.

yup, this i agree with. might actually find the cheapest pair of earphones i can find just to do final comparisons on recordings... cheers

I often fear a youngster listening to an old great like BB king etc on cheap stuff, may miss out on a great part of life by not getting the true emotion being played, and dismiss it as mediocre!, i think that's the main part i was worrying about. what if one of you fellows is the next guitar legend that gets dismissed because of this? well i suppose if you're great you will shine through no matter ya

You sound like a 15 year old who discovered Rock a couple years ago.

Less current? Those are two extremely popular and mainstream Rock/Blues artists. They're the default artists for that kind of music pretty much.

Legendary mix engineers of the world often use cheap old TV speakers and other lo-fi sources as a reference. And then there's the Yamaha NS-10, which are technically awful monitors by regular standards, yet no respectable studio is without one. Moral of the story: you suck.

I run all my audio through a General Electric Toaster Model #82T82 circa 1964.

yes, just discovered rock, but my phone is over-filled with nothing but maintream current artists like Tchaikovsky and Bieber, those 2 rascals should team up, you dont hear anything but those 2 repeating on mass media networks.

The Media and kids are still going crazy rioting over the recent East coast vs. West coast thing, you know, Mozarts' crew vs. The Handl Marauders! now im off to that new myspace thing everyone is currently talking about.

Xioaxi, your avatar and user title are hilarious but confused me

Anyway, TS - how can you possibly link audio fidelity (them listening on a crappy format) to the actual musicianship/quality of songs? They're two entirely independent things.

"Hey, look at me! I listen to classical music but can only name several of the most well know like Bach and Wagner. I also listen to Beethoven but have only ever heard Moonlight Sonata, Fur Elise, and his 5th and 9th symphonies. I have absolutely no appreciation for anything within the music and just as little understanding of what is actually going on, but I listen to it because it makes me sound more sophisticated than my peers that listen to mainstream pop music."

That describes TS's relationship with classical music.

I would not be surprised at all if he was considering like... the Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin to be excellent musicianship.
