^I will also add one more comment to this On this side of the pond, if the artist doesn't own the shop, a good piece of the cost goes t the owner for shop overhead.

Which is why its important to tip your artist as well. If you think its asking too much cash to to tip, then again, maybe you can't afford the ink.

Good ink costs money. Period. And with a good artist its worth every penny.

Absolutely.

Without wanting to sound condescending, where you're talking about "it isn't tangible" and "has no resale value", I don't think you're approaching it the right way. Which, if you ask me, is a sure fire way to ensure that you regret it further down the line.

I don't want to sound like I'm being condescending or patronising or anything, I just don't want to see you do something that you could end up regretting later down the line.

Just to reinforce - you gotta pay the price for art. With tattoos you really do get what you pay for.

CB4, if you're still looking for input, I'm currently finishing up a half sleeve, black and white no colour. I've had three different artists work on it (first guy was a clown and never went back, the cover up is one of the last things left to do). Second guy worked with me for three and a half hours and charged me $300, I tipped him $50. He was back home where I'm from, and I found another guy in the city I moved to to go to school. I've had about five hours with him and just over $500 with consult. Also tipped him $40 each time.

So it's been over $1000 CAD for me so far, even before tipping, at over ten hours with at least two left. So a bit more than $100/hr which honestly, unless you have some connections or something, is what you SHOULD pay for getting a well done tattoo. And like metacarpi and anarkee are saying, there's more to pay for than just your artists time and materials, which is why tipping is so appreciated. The second artist I went to owned and operated his shop by himself so it was a bit cheaper, but the guy I'm workin with currently works for a shop so he doesn't see half of what he charges I'd bet.

Also, from reading what you described you want, it very well may take more than ten hours if you want it to look as realistic and colorful as you described. Consultations and quotes are great and totally necessary, but I have NEVER heard of someone's sleeve coming to the exact quote they were given. I didn't ask my current artist for a quote, and I've heard of some artists being very hesitant to quote just because they don't want people to be pissed if it ends up being more.

Sorry for such a long post. But if you're serious about getting the piece done, be prepared to shell out some cash. They aren't cheap but (personally) very worth it, and like most things you get what you pay for.

Guess im not going to do it. Im still going to the consultation, but if it's more than what I want which is likely, then nah. I don't want it that bad.

I've decided to go for my next tattoo very soon and this time I'm getting a quote.

Problem is that it's 11 words long. I wanted it on my shoulders but it's too long to just get in one straight line along the back.

Has anyone else here got something similar in a style they've got? I can't think of a good looking solution yet
