I can think of 60 better bands to which I can fondle myself

"Who is this?" I cry, panic taking hold and wavering my voice.

"Filthy Casual" the voice croaks back in return.

Go on then. And I want at least a paragraph for each band detailing why you feel they are a more suitable soundtrack to your nocturnal self fondling activities than Warning are.

Will say that My Bloody Valentine top Warning on the list. Have you listened to Loveless? I mean really listened?

Dead Can Dance is another. I love me some Dead Can Dance.

I honestly don't get the appeal of Loveless. It's a decent record don't get me wrong, but I just don't get as excited as seemingly everyone else in the world. I think MBV are better as a live band than on record. Which is rare for me as I'm not a huge fan of live music.

Of that early Shoegaze scene Slowdive are the band for me. Their early EP's are fantastic.

Slowdive is also fantastic, and I'm sure Shields and crew slay live.

But can't you hear how painstakingly autistic Loveless is? That album is the product of a madman layering and fiddling with knobs in an excruciating fashion until he finds the absolute perfect sound. That sort of dedication and work bleeds through on the record. It is also a record that I go against my grain by advocating that it must be played and listened to at uncomfortably loud volumes in order to hear the various nuances. Loveless, some wine, and a pair of studio quality headphones make for an excellent night.

I've certainly found it gets better the more familiar I am with it. But I think it's lacking a little bit compositionally. It's got that production and aesthetic that it's famous for, and that's great. But I don't feel like there's a whole lot going on underneath. There's only a handful of tracks I truly feel are deserving of the albums reputation, When You Sleep being a good example.

But tracks like You Made Me Realise, and Only Shallow leave a lot to be desired to me.

I've found that when he offers a band for me to listen to - it's best I do so. He is one of the few that I will blindly listen to recs from because he is always spot on.

And yeah Neil, I get what you mean with some of the lesser tracks, but I have grown to love those too. Due to the amount of layers and actual things going on, it's not an album to be listened to a few times and tossed out (like many metal releases). The album just seems to get better the more you listen as you start to hear things you didn't before. New mysteries abound. And that to me is what makes it so damn special.
