Hello everyone.
I have run into a problem and have to admit, I am too lazy to make sure that this isn't covered in the thread, even though Jim says in the first page that if it isn't on the first page, it isn't anywhere in the thread...

My parts are 2 humbuckers (4 conductor), 1 single , 5-way switch, 2 push-pull potentiometers (to be volumes) and one DPDT switch. Yes, no tone control, I don't use it so thought I might as well just not have it.
I would like to get a HSH wiring as follows (going from neck to bridge)
1. Neck Humbucker
2. Neck Humbucker + Middle
3. Both Humbuckers
4. Middle
5. Bridge
Then to add some...
Push-pull pots for coil-splitting the humbuckers, one for bridge and one for neck.
DPDT switch to make a phase shift.
I've used this as a guidance for the last two.. would like to confirm if this works with other brand pickups.
If I need to replace the switch with a "super 5-way switch"? That is ok, I'll get one then. If it can be done with this hardware, that is good.

Phase inversion only works with multiple pickups selected so which pickup do you want to put the phase switch on? The out-of-phase sound will only be apparent when that pickup plus another is selected.

I'm assuming you want the pickup selector to operate in the order you described? Edit: pretty sure you won't be able to use a standard switch anyway though. See the first page, where I wrote about the strat switches. They only have 3 separate throws, and 5-ways just jumper the adjacent terminals.

Thanks for nearly immediate response! Really positive and so nice to see a thread going on this long.
For the phase inversion to be apparent = the 3rd pickup position, neck + bridge. It would be for the neck pickup.

And I see.. What kind of brand switch should I go for then? Possibly order it either online or order it to the local store (depending on the brand and availability). I live in Finland.
On top of this, I am by no means experienced in soldering or wiring at all, this is to my custom guitar that is in it's final stages.. So if not a wiring diagram/picture, at least a text version that what is connected where would be totally appreciated.

I guess this diagram should give me some guidance for neck + bridge.

Got my problem solved.
I will use the normal 5 way switch:
1st Bridge
2nd Bridge and middle
3rd Middle
4th Middle and neck
5th Neck
One push pull for coil splitting the other to activate the neck humbucker in any position.
The DPDT will be for phase shift.

I very much appreciate your readiness for the trouble.
I might find myself needing that diagram if I ever want to add even more versatility to my guitar

I really like this setup on the 5-way although I'd probably swap 3 and 4 to keep the middle in the middle. Could this be wired with 1 vol and 1 tone with
push pulls on each to split each humbucker?

EDIT: I gave it a go..never messed with wiring before. Is this even close?

Thanks, merc. Are the outer two lugs connected on each side? Looks like there's a trace jumpering them together.

Shoot, it sort of does in that pic. I already put it back together and stuck it back in the guitar. I should have paid more attention to it. Im not sure it would stand another take apart, those little tabs might be weak now.

Actually, now that I think about it, it would have to be a jumper trace, as that would be the only way to get both pickups on in the center position.

That's what I was thinking, but some diagrams have the other two lugs connected instead. It probably doesn't matter though.

Yo Jim,

I've just finished my first strat build (5 position 3 single coil - standard) and had an idea for some wiring but not sure how to execute it.

I've left the bottom tone pot free and was wondering if it was possible for that to operate as an independent volume for the bridge pickup? So if I have my neck position engaged (just the neck single coil), I could introduce the bridge pickup gradually with that pot?
