NGD : SG content

well found a bargain that i couldn't resist. bought myself a Vintage VS6 - SG style guitar for $150 at GC (used). this is only the 2nd Vintage i've come across as they are pretty rare around here.

review

ok it's a lower end guitar but not a total cheapie either. the spec sheet shows that it is made of mahogany (this is always kinda suspect on lower end guitars but i guess whatever they used is in the mahogany family). it has a set neck and tulip style tuners. as with most SG style guitars it has 2 humbuckers (wilkinson as is all of the hardware). the style is patterned after the 62 gibson sg with the thin neck and total access to all frets. color is red kinda translucent.

the guitar plays pretty well (although it may have been setup by previous owner). the access to all frets is kinda nice for a change (i'm a strat guy). not suprisingly the pickups aren't the best but sounded better than i figured they would. they did lack some in the sustain dept as i felt that there could have been better sustain for held notes. still they do the job and did sound really good for power chords (no real mushing). we'll see after a while of use how well the tuners hold but at first glance seem to be ok.

build quality s kind of a mixed bag. the hardware and pickups are wilkinson so they have a bit of a pedigree (i'm sure this is all chinese made though). better than what is found on many lower end guitars but not really high quality. the wood that you can see under the finish has a couple of little blemish spots but nothing that can be seen except really up close. i did notice some less than perfect spots showing a little glue around the pearloid position markers (once again you had to put our face right up to it to notice. ther is a spot at the end of the fretboard where the neck is set it that looks a little rough. frets were decent and no sharp spots on the sides.

overall a pretty decent guitar for the money. i saw it listed for 329 pounds on a british site new (not sure if that was street or list price though) seems like it could give an epiphone g-400 series guitar a run for it's money. the pic is posted below.

Had a mate with one of them. Pretty nice guitars, well done! Certainly best in the price range, congratulations.

ok you got me there.

the pickups aren't bad but are a little lacking whensingle notes are played. for power chords they give a really nice sound, tight bass and some growl.

i set my laptop on the ground and took the pic with that, no crawling on the floor for me. sorry about the lighting but it was kinda dark and the webcam i use for this isn't verygood.

oh no there goes tokyo go go godzilla - (i'm a huge fan and colledct godzilla stuff)
