I actually like the distortion quite a bit in the strat. At first, I wasn't sure I was going to like it, but it really surprised me. I avoided the distortion for a long time simply because of the name haha. But, it is pretty good. Tight low end, aggressive mids and highs, but not stabbing your ear drums to death. I was going back and forth between the Custom 5 and JB, and decided I had to give the Distortion a try. I haven't regretted that decision.

I mostly play more aggressive music, so I wasn't too worried about how it would sound clean. But it cleans up okay when you roll off the volume.

I love the JB in a stratocaster. That's the perfect Strat HB IMO.

Curious about the new Shawbuckers though. I'm wondering if they're any similar to the Gibson ones.

I really love the standard, not hot SCs of the Strat through high gain amps, specially in a band with a bassist going through some obscene amount of watts.

How do MIM Fender Strats compare to MIA and MIC ones?

My opinion: all of them are hit or miss to varying degrees. I've played some fantastic MIM and MIC Fender guitars. I've also played some serious duds. With the MIA, you're more likely to get your hands on a winner. You're also getting higher quality components. Higher quality woods. Higher quality finish. And so forth. All around, the materials are going to be higher quality and the details get more attention - plus American labor (which I think is a good thing).

With that being said. Would I trade my MIM for an MIA? Nope. If you find a winner, you'd be silly to get rid of it just because it isn't MIA. Fender guitars, even the MIA, are a mass product. You have to play a handful to find the one you like. I played through about a dozen MIM's before I picked my Agave Strat in the early 00's. And of the many guitars I have bought, traded, and sold, my MIM Strat is one of the few that I have never let go, and will likely not let go of. The real question with that guitar, unless a natural disaster rolls through, is which kid is going to inherit it if I don't take it with me in the casket haha.

If the price is right, it doesn't hurt to take a gamble on it. If you don't like it. Just resell it and get your money back.

If it has a solid finish on it that isn't transparent... well, it can be done, but I would advise against it... or that you have a back up plan for a solid color finish - just in case you discover the body is 5-7 pieces of mismatched wood grain patterns underneath the heavy poly finish.

mine is a butcher block 4 piece body, it just wouldn't look right unless you like butcher blocks.

shell pink or sherwood green, that's where i'm stuck right now.

Yes. Most bigbox DIY stores and automotive shops carry close copies in Acrylic Lacquer.
