A couple questions about home recording.
Hey everybody,
I'm looking to record (not shitty) my (electric) guitar and my songs and would like to do it on the cheap. What I'm looking for is some sort of interface ( Line 6 UX2?) to direct in my guitar without it sounding completely awful. I'll mic my amp eventually but for now, DI is the way I'll do it. What is the best cost effective interface? (Without latency) I have and will use Reaper, will that suffice? I'll be recording everything from Funk to Metal, and also bass for these songs. And as far as drums go, what programs (free?) are best and easiest to use for drum beats? Thank you very much in advance for the help.

I have been, just looking for everybody's opinions on what they use and how it works for them. And I can't find anything about Drum programs in the stickies. Just looking for personal opinions, thanks

Drum programs come down a lot more to personal taste than anything else.
Drummix Beta is free, don't know any others that are worth using. SSD4 Custom is $30 and I don't think any others even come close to that range.

TonePort UX2 is what I use for my bass and sometimes guitar, when I'm too lazy to mic my amp.
I use Reaper as my DAW. I currently use FL Studio for my drums. I'm new to home recording myself, and you can check out what I've done on my profile to get an idea about the TonePort UX2 and Reaper. I would love to find a better solution for drums, myself. |

I'm fairly new to the world of home recording myself. That being said, here's my testimony...
I've been using a Line 6 POD Studio UX2 for the past couple of months and personally I haven't had any problems with it. Admittedly, it physically FEELS like it is cheap (plastic casing and knobs, etc.) but it has worked without any sort of issues. I got it for a decent sale price at Guitar Center packaged with the PodFarm 2.0 software, Ableton Live Lite 7, Reason Adapted, and RiffWorks T4. For the price, you really can't beat it. The PodFarm plugin IMHO is worth the price alone. You can get A LOT of decent tones from it, and from my understanding there are a few add-on packs you can purchase from the Line 6 website for even more tonal options. Here's a link to my page on Soundcloud. All of the tunes on there were recorded using the POD Studio UX2 audio interface, PodFarm 2.0 effects plugin, and Ableton Live Lite 7 as my DAW (all of which is included when you purchase the Line 6 POD Studio UX2). If you have any more questions, just shoot me a PM or something. www.soundcloud.com/danpoisson EDIT: Forgot to mention that the drums were programmed with EZDrummer. If you're interested, you can buy the digital download for fairly cheap. It seems alright, but I honestly don't know too much about drum plugins... ![]()

The UX2 works, but compared to the Saffire6 pre's the difference is night and day. They're so muddy and just sound... bad. The software that comes with it is pretty useless and Podfarm is pretty low down (imo) on the list of amp sims. It gets it's arse handed to it by free amp sims.
The saffire6 isn't much pricier than the UX2 either. Especially now the Scarlett 2i4 is replacing it.

To each their own, I suppose. I can only speak from my own experience with the UX2 and thus far I've had a great deal of success using that audio interface and the Podfarm plugin, but then again I haven't really used anything else. My recording career is still in it's infancy. lol ![]()

There isn't much in the way of good free drum software. If you don't mind using an external program, exporting the WAV, then importing it into REAPER then Hydrogen Drum Machine has some good kits and it's completely free.

I thought the same when I first got my UX1... then over time I realised that my guitar never sounded as good as I wanted.

Charger356 I'm listening to your soundcloud now and the first song atleast sounds pretty good. Definitely good enough for me for now atleast. And thanks for all the input guys, now for the question I have left, as far as free drum software, Hydrogen or Drummix Beta? Hmmm

Hit up the Amp Sim sticky & look at some of the free options. Trust me, they blow Pod Farm out of the water.
