Oh, wow. Well, my only suggestion would be to clean them top and bottom with a cloth soaked in alcohol, and then finish with the normal application of string ease.

when they break usually, but i take care of them. wipe them down, run a cloth under them to get the gunk out when i'm done, wash my hands before i play and use GHS fast fret before and after playing.

I'm new but I had my stock strings changed out for elixirs and only practice many times unplugged so my strings really don't take a beating. I'm thinking of changing them out after one breaks as others have said.

Sometimes thats 1 week or 2 in the sweaty summer. Sometimes its 6 months if I don't play it a whole lot.

I'm at like 13 (lost the count) and I'm doing it the same way. I buy bulk packs on juststrings.com, I get a 25-pack of D'addario standards for 70 bucks and it lasts me a year. great deal
The exception would be my SG, which is the guitar I play the most. I'm guessing I changed her strings every month or so. My Ibanez RG has had the same set of Elixirs for two years though, and they still sound like new.

if they break. or are not good anymore

what do you people do to get them all gunky?

your environment plays a huge part in this.
my area is hardly ever humid, maybe some of you live under the sea

They have .11s at least...
I really strongly dislike D'addario strings though, I really only buy them because they're so cheap. I wish I could get Ernie Balls for the same price =(

Usually 2-3 months. Guitar strings are easy enough to change and replace. My bass, on the other hand... One string alone is $33~, so stuff that. It can wait.

When they break I just tie them back together (kidding!). I am so jealous. Nothing like a tropical beach, humidity, heat, salt to put the kabosh on strings. I am lucky if they last 3 weeks. wipe down every time with rag and alcohol. Rag looks like it has the shits afterwards. Strings will blow off in the case, played or not. I have 14 guitars, but only two strung at any given time. By comparison I leave a 60's good japanese acoustic with grovers under bed in case in Portland. When I come back once a year it is often still in tune and strings still good enough.... easy to understand why there are few native stringed instruments in SE Asia.
