Meh this is same old same old. Therefore multiple uses of modes. You have to understand all of them to be able to talk about them. Certain users thing it's one, either acceptable (application of CST) or not acceptable (starting scale on different note) and then profess that's the one and only approach. Wires get crossed arguments ensue, arguments about tonality and links to Steve Vai videos.

Just got myself a Weber Smoky Mountain 18" and made the best damn chicken I've ever had. Brined it overnight, smacked on a rub, and smoked it for 3 hours... "damm dat chikin good!"

Wait wait wait... I have to know, when improvising over the most simple of jazz standards, say So What (Dm7 Ebm7), do people really think: "Dminor, but I have to raise every 6th I play", then "Dminor with a flat tonic b2 b4 b5 and double flat 7" just to keep it "tonal"? LMAO... that's awesome! Your inventing a new genre... Math Jazz.

I wouldn't argue that So What is the most "simple" of jazz standards, due to the non-diatonic chords employed and modulations which occur within it. But it is definitely tonal, it has a tonal centre. I can tell this simply from the fact I can hear the tonal center, and it doesn't sound like crap which is a definite hallmark of atonal music.

It's a situation where the player may opt to use CST, to help better visualise accidentals over the non-diatonic chords. So if one was to interpret in D minor, over that Ebm7 they could opt to use any minor scale they like, they can derive that scale from a mode if they like and they can even call it a mode if they like. However you are correct in pointing out that the true function of the scale will still be the D minor scale with accidentals, due to the tonal centre staying at D, and the mode name is simply a name, and does not denote any modal functioning by virtue of a use of accidentals.

awesome down-tempo but nothing math about it unfortunately

the problem with CST is that it's just chord tones but falling back on the conventions of a scale, which is a very limited way to look at your approach to a chord. it's a valid line of thought if it comes natural to you after having a solid ear and understanding of dissonance and consonance, but to teach it to (essentially) beginners is asking for trouble.
