Guitar improvisation

Okay I've been playing guitar for a while now, and due to having bad teachers over the years I've just recently starting doing improv. I've memorized the pentatonic shapes and I can improv decently, but now I feel like I'm stuck, and I'm getting bored of my own improvising it feels like I'm doing the exact same thing every time. Can anyone recommend me guitar books or instructional DVDs that aren't simply " Here's 5 shapes, here's a few licks, now practice til you're jimi hendrix " type books or instructional DVDs. And also let me know how you learned to improvise well and any tips you may have. Thanks...

It's important to be completely aware of what you're playing over.

Focusing on chord tones is a good place to start. Don't think shapes, think notes.

Good suggestion thanks, and Guthrie Govan is one of my favorite players but I can't play any of his songs, they shred stuff is too fast for me, but I've been considering getting his books.

No, not his songs man, but his improvs

He has a lot of very playable, very good moderate speed improvs, in fact, over 90% of his improv isn't shred. He just incooperates 2 seconds of fast "shreddign" into every 20 seconds of improv
