This is the closest I could find that comes close to the iMac.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16883152070

Really though, I wouldn't buy either of them. Personally, I'd rather go for a small mini-ITX machine and just stick a monitor on top.

This would probably be the most cost-effective.

Sooooo Mac Mini???

I do already have a monitor that I'm using for my dell optiplex right now. Whats a good one with similar specs?

Also, another option would be a Macbook Pro.

If I were to get one, these would be the specs:

show

I would also use this for light recording, schoolwork, visual arts, and MAYBE a little gaming.

Pirce is $1,229.00

Is there a similar windows machine under that price range?

1,200 dollars and you only get a 5400 RPM hard drive and integrated shitty graphics?

Not to be rude, but none of your responses are helping. If you'd like to provide me with a link to a good alternative windows machine with a similar, or better, set of specs at a cheaper price then please do.

I see this in arguments all the time. People get chided for supposedly overpaying for an inferior machine, yet are not really supplied with any supporting evidence. I figured all those Pro PC/Anti Mac fanboys out there would jump at the chance to show a newbie how many better Windows machines are really out there.

5400 isn't terrible, but for the money you could get several non-OSX laptops for less that come with an SSD that can write up to 10x faster than that HDD. Integrated graphics are the stock graphics that are generated from the CPU. Some higher end laptops come with discrete graphics cards that don't tax the CPU.

Overall: Don't get a Macbook if you want bang-for-buck, get it only if you can't go without OSX.

I don't see how it would be damaging. I got called C-dog for a number of years despite not being a dog. I turned out alright.

you don't even have to leave Mac to beat a 5400 RPM hard drive, they have hybrid and solid state drives in some of their PCs. an i7 is all well and good but you'll really wish you had a better hard drive than a 500 tb 5400 rpm geezer.

I doubt you could find a laptop with a slower hard drive at more than let's say... 1,000 dollars. 5400 RPM is super low end

Thanks.

Could anyone explain to me what the critical aspects are that I should be looking for?

I know that I want a good processor and a lot of storage. Now I'm hearing that HD speed is important as well as some sort of non integrated graphics card.

Also, I would be really grateful for some links to actual products.

Well here's where some questions need to be clarified.

1) Do you need a laptop or will a small PC w/ monitor work as well?

2) Do you want the Mac operating system (OSX) or are you content with Windows?

3) Are you willing to build one? Building your own PC can potentially save hundreds of dollars and is quite easy to do with some research (watching a few videos). Users here can help you pick parts depending on your needs.

At first I was thinking desktop. But after consideration, I think that a laptop is what I need.

Can you build your own laptop? If so I would be interested in it.

Yes but it's not as cost efficient nor are the parts as easily available as desktop, so you'll be looking for buying one. I'll do some looking around.
