I don't have much use for mine, but it is an unmodified Rat 2. It does sound decent when I get my amp cooking, introduce a bit of natural amp breakup, and run the distortion knob at 10'oclock or less. As far as favorites... Fulltone Fulldrive 2 MOSFET: It has a great range of tones reminiscent of a tubescreamer (vintage mode) or modified tubescreamer (less mids in FM mode), and can even do a decent clean boost in compcut mode. The mosfet mode makes things crunchier and beefier, good for milder punk or alternative rock. It's good for a lot of things, which is probably why a lot of people still use it, but there are better overdrives for exclusive use (edge of breakup, metal boost, amp-like distortion, etc.) Paul C. Timmy: This pedal or any such accurate clone is perhaps an acquired flavor, but I like it for adding a bit of grunt that sounds remarkably like your amp's breakup or simply providing a transparent boost to the front end (resulting in greater volume or increased saturation depending on the available headroom of your amp). I wouldn't use it on very flat mids or scooped voiced amps, but there might be exceptions. Mad Professor Little Green Wonder (either version): If I wanted a single pedal format tubescreamer, this would be it. It's bit darker in the lows, not so prevalent in the mids (but still abundant), and way less compressed. The lack of compression and more audible bass probably doesn't help those looking to get that tight boosted metal sound, but it's nice soft overdrive pedal for running into clean or slightly hairy amps. Wampler Paisley Drive: Decent gain range, wide usable tone sweep, useful mid shift switch. Seems like an uber country overdrive pedal because of who it was built for, but there is decent amount of usable dirt on tap without sounding artificial or overly hairy around the edges.

I've run dirt pedals through some of the most expensive gain monsters around. Why? Because it helped me get my sound. ![]() |

TS808 or any variant of it, man that thing is soooooooo creamy and awesome. There are tons of great pedals out there but something with the TS808 always has me resorting to it, generally prefer my amp being pushed with a TS808 over the amps own gain stage, weird eh!

+1 to anyone who said Keeley-modded tubescreamer.
If you're looking for a pedal to use as a boost over your gain channel, I can recommend a MXR 10-band eq. It allows you to very specifically shape and tweak the shape of your boost to your liking. I prefer it for boosting over my Keeley TS9. That said, it obviously won't do for a standalone OD.

i guess i'll plug the digitech Hardwire CM-2 tube overdrive for the millionth time
. so far this pedal has done great by me and i haven't really had the urge to buy any new overdrives. very responsive eq and i like the mod switch option for more gain if needed. does the tubescreamer thing as well. |

I'm not much of a pedlulz whore but I love playing around with the EHX English Muff'n with my VH4, Herbert, Twin Jet, RoadKing II, XTC, Nitro, SLO, etc., mostly high gain amps and so much fun.
The ability to switch from the 2 stock 12AY7s to 12AU7s for less gain/distortion or to 12AX7s for more allows me to discover various tones from the beasts. They work extremely well with the amps' "Clean" settings. ![]()

the only overdrive i'm currently using is my v2 catalinbread wiio. seriously does sound like a cranked amp, both sonically and dynamically. i still love my timmy, just never use it anymore
![]() however i MIGHT be looking at a bearfoot honeybeest/bee. didn't like it at first, but it's grown on me. i've got the tgp bearfoot tour box at the moment.
