My bass instructor taught me to learn scales this way:

Ionian - pattern starts on g
Dorian - pattern starts on a
Phrygian - pattern starts on b
Lydian - pattern starts on c
Mixolydian - pattern starts on d
Aeolian - pattern starts on e
Locrian - pattern starts on f

This is basically playing the scales in order but starting from notes going up the chromatic scale. So how is this useful and applied to music, other than helping me to learn the chromatic scale at the same time as these other scales?
