i wonder if the fine tuners would have enough screw room to tune it to drop D

I promise if you plan to go lower than Dropped D you'll need thicker string gauges. The string gauges add extra tension to the guitar when it's in a lower tuning. Don't get excessive with the string gauge though. If you get it too heavy, it'll be a pain in the ass to tune up higher than the tuning you're in. I suggest hard tailing your guitar, or buying a Tremol-no. It's 75 dollars, and well worth it.
