Amp head advice
Ok, here's the deal. I have an 8x10 Carvin cabinet without a
amp head to power it. My budget is about $500 and the bass I'll be primarily using is a 62 Fender Bass. If you are about to ask "how did I afford to get the bass?", I bought it when times were better. I play a wide variety of styles so it has to be flexible. Any advice or am I asking for the impossible? |

+1 to all of those.
Also, look into the carvin BX500, the Aguilar 350 (or the 500 if you can go used). The biggest thing is to try before you buy. Any of these could work, but you should know what you are getting before you buy it.

The tonehammer is a bit of a con, really. If that's the sound you want I'd recommend buying their pedal and a separate power amp to get the same sound with more power for less money. Can you pick up a used Genz Benz Shuttle for that budget? Not sure what sort of money they go for over there.

I had not considered that. Thanks, I'll keep that in my mind. I was planning to pick one of those up eventually. TS, listen to Zipho, ignore me.

It'd be possible to find a Shuttle 6.0 around that price range, which would be a very good choice. Another choice for a tube pre would be something like a used SWR 350. TS, if you want max versatility I'd suggest snagging a used Markbass Little Mark II or III. A used one should run you about $400, 500w @ 4 ohms, and nice and compact. IMO they slay most heads in their price range.

Well; since you've got a Carvin cabinet (and assuming you are in the U.S.A.), why not a Carvin bass amp to go with it? Carvin's BX500 is a great amp, very versatile and goes for $400.00. I think you'll like it.
