New pickups for my Agile or save for Les Paul??
Hey guys, so I have an older 2800 dlx with the bone nut, grover tuners solid body pre law suit headstock and I'm wondering if it's more financially savy to just upgrade the pickups rather than save for a les Paul.
I like the guitar it plays nice, quality is fantastic and the pickups are ok a little muddy. It has some type of Alnico in there now. I'm thinking 57 classic in the neck and buestbucker in the bridge and hoping to nail that classic rock skynyrd tone.. I play out of a 1984 Marshall jcm 2204. Anyway would it be worth it saving for a real les Paul or should I just put fancy pickups in a guitar I already have? Thanks.

What's your amp?

I'd rather keep the guitar because I think it's a unique color and brand. Would be fun to have for a long time. I just want to know if I'm compromising on tone and playability because with my strat I tried to go cheap before and wasn't satisfied until I bought my 62...
The strat is my main guitar anyway though but I need some buckers for some songs

The way I see it is if you're happy with what you have, you have no need for a "real" Les Paul.
You like how the Agile looks and feels, so upgrade that bad boy. ![]()

I guess my next question is about pickups. Does that 57 classic in the neck and buestbucker in the bridge work? Also matched pickups? What to look for, buying advice, thanks!

It really depends. Why don't you like your current set and what exactly are you looking to achieve with a new set? If you can answer those, it'll help us give you recommendations more suited to your needs.

I think the current pups are too muddy, not clean enough. I want lynyrd skynyrd/classic right rock tone/older chili peppers

I've never met you before and I know nothing about you save for what you've put in this thread but I reckon a pair of Duncan Pearly Gates would be right up your street.

The Dimarzio 36th anniversary pickups are pretty cool for classic rock kind of sounds. Alnico V magnets as well so they're a bit more crisp than your contemporary PAF clone with Alnico II.

If you're worried about spending more than the guitar on pickups. Why not look at GFS? They have tons of models. And all pretty cheap, I've liked every pair I've tried.
