Holy shit. The Nats signed Scherzer. RIP in peace all other NL East teams. Their pitching staff is absurdly loaded now.

Also, even if they don't trade a surplus starter this year, Fister and Zimmerman are both FA after 2015. I really want the Giants to sign Fister.

This makes me sick. While Scherzer's contract will probably not be a good one (nothing official but it's looking like 7 years, $200+ million), the Nats' staff just got even more disgusting.

Nats beat reporters are also saying they're getting rid of Strasburg.

Personally, if I was them I would rather keep Strasburg instead of signing Scherzer to such a long contract. Not to mention the contract is half-deferred, they're going to paying him $15 million a year for 14 years. Reminds me of the Bonilla contract.

But yeah, next year they're going to be stacked. Really, the NL East has some insane pitching staffs. Nats probably have the best rotation in the league, and the Marlins and Mets are both somewhat loaded.

Same. Strasburg is still young and would be much cheaper to lock up than Scherzer. He'll probably be a comparable or better pitcher over the next 7 years too. If I was a GM there's no way I'd sign Scherzer for 7 years. Even if his shoulder doesn't fall apart, there's no way he's gonna maintain good production for 7 more years.

Agreed, I don't really get the logic behind signing Scherzer and possibly trading Strasburg. A Zimmermann or Fister trade would make more sense since they're both free agents after this year, but even then I'd rather keep Zimmermann. Also the Bonilla deferral was much, much less than this one. Bonilla is only getting $1.19 million a year, and while that's over 24 years the total deferred payment still comes out to be a third of Scherzer's total.

What a weird signing.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to see them trade Zimmerman or Fister to try to get some offense. A rotation of Scherzer, Zimmerman/Gio, Strasburg, Fister/Gio, and Roark would still be the best in MLB.

Vogelsong just signed a one year deal with the Giants. That gives them 6/7 starters with potentially 2 good ones if Matt Cain comes back from his elbow and ankle surgeries and can pitch like he did in 2009-2012. Yay 2015

Marlins signed Ichiro for a one-year deal. I guess he's mostly being signed for his veteran presence and depth, since we already have a really good outfield with Yelich/Ozuna/Stantion.
