This is a pretty solid mix, in my opinion. The guitars might be a tad bit loud; I think if you can lower them and mesh everything together a bit more, you'll have a much more balanced and thus bigger sounding mix overall. The little lead guitar part around 2 mins could come up a bit in volume too.

Band I'm mixing:

These kids are in drop E... it's a struggle. Any input, especially on the low end would be greeeeat. Thanks!

So, this happened. Just shitty bedroom recording for testing mixing. Feedback please, friend-people.

Would really like some help. Never mixed before. Also ignore the random stop of the guitars in the middle, it's not 100% done yet. More like 99%

Yeah I actually agree with you. I will go back at that one I think. I am going to start trying to do one mix a week and get back up to speed. I just thrashed this one out today:

I thought your Alestorm take was ripped from the album hahaha.

Hey all, I've just completed my first mix (and perfunctory attempt at mastering).
It's here: https://soundcloud.com/orrymr/demo1
There's a lot that needs to be done. The first obvious mistake I make was not separating out the individual drum components into different tracks. Instead I just EQ'd and compressed the kit as a whole. The bass is too soft, I know. Overall I was quite pleased with the guitar sound, although it can definitely be improved.

Like I said, this was my first attempt, but I would love some crit to point me in the right direction.

@powerhead - Just a few things that come to mind immediately

Entire mix is muffled, like it's underwater.
You've already mentioned your drums. If you're using a sampler, you would've been better off working with the presets than to have the first & only stage of processing occur on the bus...

Bass is actually present/audible. Are you low passing everything else/the mix?

How are you recording?

Releasing our EP and any kind of critique would help.
Only thing I really wasn't a fan of from the start was single-tracking the vast majority of riffs. True, the left and right were mic'd into different cabs and EQ'd differently, but it's still single tracked.

Ways to improve guitar tone are my first requests (I'm the guitarist) as it seems to lack some attack at times. Kick enhancements would help too, get a little more snap.

I C4C as always

Yeah, mono guitars aren't working for ya : / if you know the problem why not fix it? :P It's only serving to cloud everything else having it all down the center.

@Night: For the drums I'm not using a sampler, I'm using the demo version of Addictive Drums. What do you mean by "on the bus"?

I recorded the bass and guitar through my GT-100, which I'm using as the interface. Other than that, I recorded the guitars twice, one track hard left, the other hard right. One those 2 tracks I EQ'd and and compressed. I then routed those two tracks to two other tracks which I then compressed and EQ's again. And yeah, I did low pass everything in the mix - I routed everything to a master track where I applied the low pass filter

Sry about that, I have a habit of referring to virtual drum software as samplers.

You mentioned using processing on the drums (stereo bus) rather than bussing them out to process each shell/OHs.

You would be better served learning to process the tracks individually.
