Hey, I'm meeting with a guy who's selling this: http://sacramento.craigslist.org/msg/5425633001.html

I emailed him but he appears to have no idea what the specs are. Anyone know where I can find specs, or already know, for a Les Paul Studio 2002?

490/498 pickups, probably a 60s carve neck but they did come with the 50s carve too. Other than that, pretty standard LP specs. Anything in particular you wanted to know about?

Pretty nice flame on that one for a Studio. I wonder if it's the Plus Top or AAA Top or whatever they were calling that model in 2002.

Yeah, the neck carve (I prefer 50s, thick as possible), and the pickups were what I was mainly looking for. I also heard that depending on the year, Studio bodies are thinner than Standard. This true?

As with everything Gibson it's not quite as simple as yes or no. Studios have been thinner, but it depends on the year. 2002 I think might be a tad thinner than a Standard. They've messed around with the dimension a few times and I can never keep track of which years are which. It's varied from a quarter inch thinner to the same thickness (2" at the edge) with a few points in between.

IIRC they started out quite noticeably thinner (quarter inch for some 80s Studios) and then gradually the gap closed. Sometime in the early 2000s they went back to full thickness (or close to it) but I don't think it was as early as 2002. It might be, though. I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't all uniform, either. Studio body thickness difference might have something to do with getting the last bodies at the bottom of the pile, or ones with a bit too much sanded off, or what have you. So even within the same year they may not be quite the same.

Keep in mind that LPs are hand sanded so even Standards vary somewhat. It's probably not something most people would notice or care about unless it's on the really thin end.

Nice score man! I love alpine white customs! My second favorite LP style. HNLPD I bet she sounds amazing

If the guitar is a 2012 model does it have ebony or richlite for a board?

I think its Ritchlite 2012 was the changeover if I'm correct, Either way it feels great looks awesome and its smooth as hell..i personally don't think fretboard wood changes the tone but that ones subjective haha

I don't think it makes a difference in sound either but don't say that too loud around here or you might start a 7 page debate.

I was more asking out of curiosity.

Haha i was scared to type it lol, i can't see visible wood grain so its more than likely Ritchlite i think it was only the first few of 2012 to have Ebony

Well very few (if any 2012s) came with Ebony so I think you'd be right in thinking it's Richlite. IIRC after 2010 Gibson started going laminate for some Ebony boards and then when they got nailed by the feds they went to Richlite for a bit until they brought back ebony in a limited quantity on the True Historic CS LPCs (I.E: the '57, '68 and '74 RIs). IIRC they still don't have ebony on the regular LPC to this day.

I have a Burny Les Paul with the Gibson Split Diamond headstock inlay. I don't find a serial number or model number on it. How can I identify what I have? Thanks

If your Burny doesn't have a stamped serial number behind the headstock then the serial should be in the pickup cavities or possibly the control cavity. If you haven't modified anything and the electronics are original, then if you can post pictures we might be able to identify some of the parts being used.

Lots of pictures: cavities, front and back etc... Will also help.

If its Cream colored its for sure post 83. The split diamond was done from mid 82s to I think 88ish. Pre 82, they had no inlay on the HS if its an LPC style IIRC.

Yeah it happens

I liken it to watching a car crash unfold. Some people are really curious about how nasty it really is
