I guess it just depends on where you downloaded it. I almost always have the open hardware monitor gadget showing my cpu and gpu usage and temperatures on my second monitor so I'd have noticed if it was doing anything like that.

Really, I don't even use foobar anyway. I got it a while back to play around with, but realized I was basically trying to make it work the same as the way I have winamp set up so I went back to using winamp. I just kept it for converting other formats into mp3.

Gonna sell an old laptop. I will only leave Windows and office on it, deleted everything else. What I am afraid off is that some personal data can be recoverable by some computer ninjas. So how do I avoid that? Should I use some software that clears out the entire disk and then reinstall windows etc. or is there software that can work around the stuff that I did not delete?

Short answer, take out hard drive and destroy it totally.

Long answer, 0 write it repeatedly with software designed for it then pray it works as even this may not render everything unrecoverable. By now you need specialised tools however.

My brothers getting some new parts for his computer and i've not looked at anything to do with computers for ages .

With graphics cards, is it better to spend more on a card in a lower chipset than about the same in the chipset above? So for example, the most expensive radeon 7700 to the cheapest radeon 7800?

Also he doesn't know what motherboard he's got, is there some sort of tool he can use to find what motherboard he has?

GPU naming conventions and power is all too complicated to even guess these days.

http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

Just look at that and find the best you can for the budget.

I wouldn't weigh to heavily into that list. I have gone over at least 10 separate benchmark reviews and each one of them has significantly different results than that page. It is essentially saying that the best GPU out there is a GTX 780 TI when test after test has shown that it is on par with the R9 290X. On top of that the R9 295X2 kicks the shit out of every GPU that is out there right now, including the TITAN Z which costs twice as much as the R9 295X2.

When it comes to 1080p resolutions, the 290X and the 780 ti are only off by a few 1/10's of a percentage point. Those bench marking programs are really bias towards some chip set structures.

If you really want to get a good raw GPU comparison, use this:

http://www.hwcompare.com/

That will give you the specs of each card and which one should be relatively better than the other. It is most useful when comparing manufactures to themselves. Trying to compare Radeon and nVidia chips to each other really requires going over the bench mark tests in real world applications. But if you were comparing a Radeon HD 6950 to a Radeon HD 7850, then the tool I linked is more piratical.
