I really hope so. It would be sad not to. I have no idea who to talk to regarding this issue, but I'll talk with Dan.

Yes, we can archive the contest threads, either in the Archives sub-forum or more likely in the S&L Archive Thread.

If we can do that I'm fine with downsizing. The name change is a harder sell as this was something we were trying to do 7 years ago and at this point it seems like a lost cause. But whatever y'all think we should do is fine by me.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, I know it's called the S/L forum, but can I throw down my short stories here too?

It's okay to ask in here.

It's also okay to post short stories, just see if they're short, because I don't think people will have the patience to read a long long one. But yeah, show 'em what you got man !

I'm am all for the name change.

That, for me as a graduate of marketing more than anything else I suppose, is why I think people aren't coming in here... aside from no one visiting the website as a whole, that is. S+L is "branded" all wrong, and often I think people are intimidated by how what they expect is a lyrical/music forum, and yet what they actually find is a bunch of philosophically-leaning, highly introspective poetry. I'm not saying it seems elite, that word is too loaded and gives totally the wrong impression. But I'm at a loss how else to describe it.

I know that I'm personally guilty of not creating a welcoming atmosphere around here (..as little as I visit these days... years... whatever).

Sometimes it can feel abit like you can't post anything here aside from intelligent poetry without, you know, people getting upset. The same thing tends to happen in the Tabs forum when people post anything other than Cynic-inspired prog metal. Got a pop-punk song? The only response you'll get is "super generic" and a bunch of regulars acting like they're in the Pit.

Anyway, I really really love the idea of a Lyrics and Poetry forum that works like this place used to back in 2007. Pipe dream? Perhaps. But I do think we can do more to create that kind of atmosphere.

All for it, but we have to do something more than a simple downsize and reshuffle.

What was different about this forum back then? Aside from there being more people.

More focus on offering constructive criticism. The "full crit". Was once a bar where we solved each other's problems, now it's a bar to catch up and buy each other drinks.

This.

Forums are becoming less relevant. Trying to find answers via a forum on Google any more is a bloody mess. Try searching a specific topic and the name of the forum (Reddit for instance) and you basically get a bunch of websites that have no bearing on what you were searching for, simply because they have the most amount of money to push their site to the first few pages. The reason why Facebook is stepping on everyone's faces is because they have the money to do it.

Don't let that deter you, though. Forums, in my opinion, are still entirely relevant and will always be around. It's just the community has to put more effort into it for it to thrive. Folks have become lazy. We join forums to ask a couple of questions, post a few remarks and then fuck off. This is because we have websites like Twitter and Instagram that condense everything and 'simplify' our lives to the point where we can spend all of 20 seconds to post the most amazing feeling in a small square photograph or a comment with no more than 140 characters or whatever it is.

There once were days where people would spend an entire day having conversations about their favourite records or the newest innovations in 3D technology. Now it's condensed into bite-sized 'clouds' of information for us to digest quickly and effectively. The Internet is evolving, and as dramatic as it sounds, forums need to adapt. Carmel suggested something to me in a PM that befits this ideology. I'm not sure whether she'd be OK with me posting it, but I can't imagine it being a problem.

I find forums to be interesting. I think it's cool to see a community over the internet who've known each other for years and the friendships that form. Unfortunately I was too young when they were cool.

C4C mannn, I PROMISE!

Those full-crits were so important back around 03 - 06/07ish. So many people became much better writers than how they started out. The competitions we used to hold were also pretty bomb.

Tight community back then. Really tight.

woahh there's a name! hi. hope you've been well nelson. yeah i think better c4c is important (i may be the biggest betrayer of this in the past two years--i was just doing so much of it with friends in person that i just sort of posted here secondarily and put my energy into people handing me stuff in person, as unfair as that may actually be). a big group of those friends moved away so if people are up for it, maybe some revitalization in the most basic aspect of the forum could actually happen, and would be my best bet to help. i know i'm not saying this first, but basically, i agree.

OK, so I think maybe folks would like to read something Carmel sent to me late last year. Post your thoughts about it.

With personal stickies available we can completely transform the forum. Each regular can have their own thread, in which they post ALL their works. This will operate much like the S&L archives, where the first few posts will be dedicated for a personal profile, some information the person wants to share, a lot like a facebook page, maybe even with photos, and then there will be a post with all the links to the poems. Critiques can quote a piece to critique it, and they don't have to only critique the most recent work like this. It gives a chance for the threadstarter to repost old things, maybe even post revised versions and link to them, plus it has the advantage of a content, which lists all pieces, by genre, titles, links to contests, to websites the writer recommends etc. Plus, people can sticky their favourite writers.

Now this will be for regulars, people who want to put in the effort and create a profile like this. The rest of the forum can also post just one piece here and there, and thus you will create discussions inside threads, because people will be able to communicate with the writers in their threads and it will not be counted as spam. This requires a change of view towards what the forum is, more a social network than a critiquing forum per say, because this is what people want these days.

We can have large stickies that basically cater to contests, specific discussions (like maybe have a discussion of the week thread where you can pick a famous author and talk about their pieces etc.) you can also keep sticking writer's threads if their latest piece wins WoTM or whatever.

Personal stickies is an interesting idea, it might just work you know.

We'd have to be careful to not come across as unwelcoming, I can see it would be quite intimidating if you came here to post something but you see most activity is in a bunch of personal threads by users who've been doing it for years.

The other problem I can see is there might be way too many personal threads.

I still think it would be a good idea, just because there isn't anything else like it and I can see it building a really tight community.
