well...I pretty much memorize those 5 jig saw puzzle patterns like the back of my hand.
Yes, I use the Root to establish the so call key/tone/pitch of various flavor of scales.
The pentatonic is naked kind da.lol I chase arpeggios.
I also memorized the natural notes on the fretboard in the key of C like the back of my hand. It's a reference point of the major diatonic system. Kind of like seeing all the white keys on the piano.
The first time I actually played multi keys was an idea I got from a lead guitar book.
A simple 12 bar movement...but it asked me to change keys as I play over the chords.
It racked my brain because my brain got reamed with certain sets music theory I was
trained as a child dating back to 1st grade.lmao
Anyways..it asked me to solo A min over A7, C min over C7, D min over D7.
For starter....all the riffs sounded the same.. just changing the pitch of it. Meaning
everytime I do that...Im not playing in the same key as the parent scale.
So, Im bascailly shift the entire fretboard pattern as I would with power chords.
It sounded good. It works...and I wasn't going to complain.lol
Then it asked me to play major pentatonic over those same chords.
Then it asked me to mix it up as I do question and answer phrases.
if I know where the root is at....the 5th is easy. That's just making a power chord.lmao
Then it just a matter of choosing a maj or min 3rd. Then I can expand from there.
Whether I build chords or scales from there. I need a root as a reference point.
Of course it helps if you also memorize the dominate has a flat7
Then the axis pitch system made more sense to me.
Then one day I googled the hundreds of flavor of scales to choose from, which totally
blew my mind even more.
