Help me identify this dirt!

My Randy Holden kick continues...

Every since some guy on a Guitar forum introduced me to Randy Holden's 'Population 2' album, I've been searching for a way to replicate his tone. For those not familiar with the man or his work, here we go:

Another One:

I was wondering what kind of dirt he is using. It might all be from his amp, but there seems to be a Fuzz in there somewhere. My friend thinks it's a Germanium Fuzzface, but it could also be a Muff of some sort. I absolutely LOVE the tone and I'm wondering what kind of dirt box could get me into that territory.

I have a Whiteface Rat reissue and I've tried to get this (Holden's) tone. No dice.

yeah a rat's not really going to work, it only really gets fuzzy when you turn the distortion knob way up and by that point it's way too saturated for those more vintage-type fuzz tones.

I'm not that familiar with fuzz, so listen to CodeMonk. Sounds like he's already more or less solved it, anyway.

Any chance it could be overdrive? Or something other than fuzz?

that sounds like a fuzz face with the guitar's volume knob rolled off.

So it's either a Tonebender or a Fuzz Face. I think this may be Germanium but I dunno. Hmmm...

have you tried out a skreddy lunar module mini deluxe? aggressive fuzz face derivative that lets you set the gain of the input transistor for tonebender sounds. it's freaking brilliant. so many shades of dirt.

Sounds like an orange or sunn amp, typical stoner band sound, regardless of the style of this song, perhaps an old marshall jtm or something, but yeah it does seem to be a boosted sound.

Could be an OD it's not that fat in the middle or round.

There's also an lfo throughout the song at different rates and stereo spreads, you could mistake that for fuzz.

Try a hard driven orange amp will get you close.

Sunn Orion system i believe. designed as a modular system with a preamp as the head unit, and cabinets with built in power amps. same amps the Who used on Magic Bus (or so i have been told) the power amps had some kind of transistor issues where they would heat up and then break when jostled. very hard to come by, the company destroyed a bunch of them supposedly.
