So I've been looking at getting guitars and something has me curious. I'm primarily looking at HSH and HSS config axes. The 5-way switches show they split the humbucker and mix with the single coil. But when I'm googling away about pickups and everything it seems like you have to have special push/pull pots or something like that to actually split the coils. Is there a difference, or am I just really missing something, because I'm legitimately confused.

Nope, just gotta have a special 5-way switch that has coil-tapping ability.

So, it's safe to assume a guitar with a 5-way is splitting the humbucker? And if I changed out pickups I would just have to wire it the same way for splitting?

If the guitar comes in a HSS config and has a 5-way, then yes, it is safe to assume. And as far as changing out the humbucker, you would just have to make sure the pickup has the ability to be split.

Okay, that makes me feel much more comfortable going forward. Theres an HSH Ibanez I want and I love the fourth notch position.

What's the difference between series and parallel while we're at it. I have a vague idea of what it means electronically, but no idea in regards to pickups.

pick ups in series are in line with each other
pup>pup
the lead from one into the ground from the other

pick ups in parrales are connected well in parralel
both grounds toghether and both hot toghether

Thanks guys for everything.

It looks like google shows wiring in series is what provides that super hollow strat sound in the notch positions. Is that what you would expect from pretty much any guitar that combines pickups?

haha I was reading the exact article too. I'm talking about the notch positions on a strat. So mainly I mean parallel/series going from one pickup to another, not the two coils of a humbucker. You know how the 2 and 4 positions on a strat combine the two pickups. It sounds very hollow to me, but in a good way.

also in series you ad the resisistance i think tat mkes the sound not hollwier

i mentioned humbuckers to explain that sereis usually sounds thichrr like a humucker
