I try to make my music too complicated...

I'm suffering from a bit of writer's block as of late. I'm pretty sure it'll go, but it's made me worry even more about something that I see as a problem with my writing.

I always try to make passages too complicated. This causes parts to not fit together, and to lose any real sense of build-up and tension in a track.

I like post-hardcore and post-rock, and progressive metal.

When I'm noodling I'll come up with something that sounds alright, but I think that it sounds a little bit boring, so I'll try to add complexity, but I'm not good enough to make it work. So I end up with a crap sounding complex attempt, and a more basic one that I think is boring.

Does anyone else have this issue? Or am I talking nonsense?

Yeah, but would learning through tab help? Or should I really focus on getting my ear better?

ear

workign on your ear is the single most important thing you can do as a musician besides lerning to play your instrument

i also recomend learning a bit of basic theory at least
the major scale
minor scale
the names of the notes
chord construction

putting a name to things really helps with remembring the sound of it
at least it did for me

By adding complexity do you mean adding layers of different instruments following different melodies/rhythms or one instrument with a more complex arrangement?

Yeah, I have the basic theory down, just don't really do much learning songs by ear. Gonna have to give that a go.

And by complex I mean more interesting really. You probably won't like the track much, but I really like these technical-but-not-wankery tracks.
