Recommend me a 5 string?
I am a guitarist that enjoys recording songs out of my bedroom. I like to be able to do everything myself like program the drums and record the bass guitar. Only problem is the only bass i have is an Ibanez gsr 200. Not ideal for recording very low tuned metal haha.
Ive used my friends ibanez Sr900 which sounds fantastic at higher tunings, but at drop A and below it starts to sound flubby and buzzy, though still 100x better than the gsr lol. That is why i want to buy a 5 string. Not only for recording but i also enjoy playing the bass guitar and dont mind shelling out $ for a decent instrument. I want a 5 string that has decent clarity at very low tunings like G and G#. i was looking at an Ibanez SR405 i saw in a local music store. havent gotten a chance to play it. Ideally id like to spend less than 500$. so what would you guys recommend?

Used 505, 405 or even the 305. All are really solid and objectively the best for that purpose in that price range.

Actually, 35" scale is made for the purpose of stabilizing the low strings when downtuning. Basses with longer scales probably exist somewhere, but I've never played or seen one so I can't comment.
A 35" scale with the corect string gauge would probably be fine for you.

Yes, 35" scales are generally considered to sound better, but it's a lot to do with the construction of the bass as to how well the note rings out.

It's not a bad bass. Not sure starting out on a 6-string is for everyone, though. Plus they're tuned in all fourths, so it's slightly different to playing a guitar, anyway.

Ibanez BTB 405 or 455. You have to find them used.
The hard ware is Fair, so to make it near perfect one needs to get Gotoh Machines and Knobs and Ibbie 2BB1MR2K to be as satiisfied as physically possible.

What would you guys pay for a used Lakland Skyline 55-02 that is in good condition? It has the three tone burst finish.
I have an opportunity to purchase one for $750obo, I saw that the MSRP is over $1400. I was going to purchase a cheap 5 string but after owning a mediocre guitar and then upgrading, I decided to start with something nicer. |

Im not a beginner, i played bass for a few years before i ever picked up a guitar. I took some lessons and stuff. I only posted the 6 because it seemed to be the best value around that price range, even for the 5 strings i saw.

Do you have the opportunity to try it out first? In any case I'd suggest really thinking about what you want. 6 strings are more expensive, so if you only want/need a 5-er, might as well save some cash or buy a nicer 5 string. Quote:
Threadjacking a bit? $750 is a good price for a 55-02, they generally go for a bit more than that on the used market. Very good bass that, and that's a good deal on one.

The big thing here, is to try before you buy. We can give big lists of stuff, but you need to make the final decision. If you like the 6string better than any price comparable 5s, then get it.

+1 on the BTB 455 or 405. If you're tuning that low, you'll definitely be better off with a 35" scale.
However, if you've got the $$$ to spend, check out Dingwall basses. These are multi-scale, with the low string being 37". Fairly expensive instruments, but they do have a cheaper model, the Combustion. http://www.dingwallguitars.com

And even a used Combustion is around double TS's budget.

this was really the only quality 35" scale i could find for under or around 500 bucks. The nicer model is the exact same specs except 34" scale and it has emgs and its twice the price! Of course im not going to buy something without at least trying it, im gonna play some 5 strings at my local music shop and check sh*t out. Guitar center also does 30 day returns. So if i do order something, i can really try it out in my bedroom studio and decide if i like it or not.
