Tanglewood 'Les Paul' copy - Chronic high action, neck relief problems..help???
So, i have this Tanglewood Les Paul copy, I've just restrung it, give it a once over, and set it back up again, when i realize that through an amp it a) sounds terrible, b) the strings are going out of tune even more than the old strings did(!) (yes they are on properly, and yes they are stretched in etc), but most of all, the action and neck relief is total garbage. Its horses**t. I like low action, as im a lead guitar player, and one thing i just will not tolerate is high action.
Having played about with various settings of neck relief via the truss rod, and the action by raising/lowering the bridge, i just cant find a happy medium between low and buzzing too much, to needing a ladder to reach the strings from the fret board. The gap from the string to fret board at the nut is approx. 1.75-2mm, while at the 22nd fret, it is around 3.5-4mm. This is way past the point of being unplayable for me. Prior to changing strings and the bit of maintenance etc, i was pretty happy with the action and setup, but now i hate it. It took me about 6 hours to dial in a setting i like last time, but this time i don't really have so much time to mess about with it. Anyone any ideas? The only logical next step i can think of, is a new neck or having the existing neck re-faced or skimmed/shimmed etc, which as its a glued neck i'd rather not do. All i do know, is when i get a better job, I'm saving for a Gibson, and this thing is off in the trash the moment it arrives. Seriously, i hate it so much, i wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Help!!! |

Take it to a tech?
You've obviously changed something, but you don't know what it is. Maybe tech can fix it.

I don't think I've changed anything, i don't think there's really anything else to change (that i havent already tried) I had this same problem before, but I managed to sort it out. This time, it just wont seem to go.
Good advice though, looks like the only solution is to get a tech to look at it ![]() |

Did you change string gauges and not compensate for that?
I'd just take it to a tech

Darkness... you said that you:
a. Changed the strings (same brand and size?) b. adjusted the truss rod c. adjusted the string heights So things were changed (not picking on you, just saying). Have you tried another set of strings? Is the neck bolt on? If so, check the mounting screws, tighten if needed. If its a glued in neck, check for a separation at the heel. Lastly... when in doubt, take it to a good luthier. P.S. Buying a Gibson is no guarantee this won't happen again.

If you decide to get rid of the guitar, instead of throwing it the trash can I have it?
Seriously.

I've pretty much sorted it now. And believe it or not, all i did, was not play it for a couple of days and let everything settle in. A few more adjustments, perhaps, but not much.
I've pretty much come to accept that it's not the sort of guitar to have perfect low action, its still a little higher than i'd like but it will do. It's glued on mahogany set neck. It seems to have settled with playing. I havent changed string brand/gague, i've always fitted Rotosound '10 gague to it (Roto Yellows) Cheers for the advice guys anyhow ![]() |
