funnily enough that's exactly what I'm starting to move into.

I've got a few shots that are probably postable, but we'll have to wait and see

Had a giant poster at work I realized is a giant, non-translucent white backdrop. Brought it home. I've got a table by a very big window that the sun rises almost directly into. Should be fun. Time to make some DIY reflectors.

if you ever get the chance those big advert cases have good diy backdrops just cause the posters are really big, so if anyone is ever replacing/changing it and you happen across them, they'll usually give you the old poster.

Currently I have an A1 mccain's baked potato advert on my wall.

This is great, props.

Fog is such a great time to get shots. I have no camera anymore so I've been trying to take pics with my phone and that's not been going great lol, especially cuz of the fog.

I have a very vague awareness of leading lines, so to speak but am not savvy enough to fully understand what you meant. Could you pick out an example??

I will when I get home! I suppose, then, you just have an innate eye for them.

I think the point he's making is that you're being drawn to scenes for the right reasons, but you're not using those elements to best effect inside the frame.

take this one for example:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/c... W4zx8Yef5nTkBm

it's just a carpark/dropoff zone right? its a snapshot, who cares? why did you take it in the first place? why did you choose it out of (I'm assuming) dozens if not hundreds of photos from your holiday? (I'm not trying to be nasty with any of these questions by the way lol)

I would wager that you were drawn to that scene by the lighting on the ceiling, and rightly so. That right there is half the battle won already - the other half is being able to work the scene and get the shot that captures the interest in those lines. I can see them, but its kind of unclear.

Obviously I realise that when you're on holiday you're not going to stop the cab and walk around taking photos for 15 minutes every time you see something interesting, but that sort of approach (when convenient) is basically the difference between nice photo and "I want to hang that on my wall"

So yeah, you seem to have the eye for interesting things, but you need to start considering composition more. Here's a handy resource for the various concepts, its quick to get through and can really change the way you look at things overnight

http://compositionstudy.com/

The other part of it is getting out of "wow, that looks cool - *snap*" and into "wow, that looks cool - *WHY does that look cool*"

Diamond said it well.

For example:

The cable cars photo. The draw from lower left to upper right is pretty common in that "brush stroke" kind of line. The only issue is that they should really have been centralized, and the eye should have led you down the cable cars. As a result of the framing, it makes me feel like they're and under-border and it invites me to look at the mountains and sky.

#6 with the giant window is almost really great, but the angle at which the hand railing does in the bottom left of the photo contradicts the way the eye naturally wants to float across the photo. It's a great abstract image floating into a really rigid, vertical structure that had great lines and lots of hard stops to get caught up into, but the whole thing is distorted by the casual angle of the floor and you don't get that great abstract architecture feeling.

#9 Great job for picking out the great reveal of the temple past stone, but I would have centered up and made the top of the staircase the center focus, as if it was a reveal beyond the incline.

#10 almost great as well. The two buildings naturally make a point, like and A shape. Where does that A shape take you in the picture? It's too bottom heavy, no one should naturally flow to the top middle of a photo by rule.

#13 Center up on it. Symmetry looks rad as hell.

And so on.

I can only really pick on the architecture shots because that's all I feel I'm really that good at outside of my normal band photos. The big thing to remember is your perspective as a human with two eyes, and how that itself takes away from the illusion a lot of pictures can give you that look fantastic.

Try to get rid of 'perspective' in your architecture stuff. Line up with buildings so you can only see a flat side. Get level with a bridge so it seems like the bottom is a straight line, etc.

And most importantly, keep shooting!

First time taking a crack at product photography. I left my tripod at work, so sorry for the freehand blurriness. It's at about 50mm. I tried to freehand my 200mm but it was coming out like hellabutts.

Just my used pedal.

EDIT: Hehe

Thanks for the detailed feedback, Dave and JR. I see what you guys mean now and will definitely pay more attention to the "end of the line" so to speak.
