Question what kind of cell phone do you use to record a gig?

assuming you are a 3, 4 to 5 piece metal band who plays loud in a small club. or whatever your live gig is like really.
might as well learn about what other type of bands use too and where they play and what works for them.

i want something that doesn't distort, or not distort the sound too much. the video i part i never have had a problem with, so...

got a recommended make and model?

thanks

You don't use a cell phone. Plain and simple...

Yea...no...

Aside from the fact that it WILL distort (the PA is very ****ing loud and you said you play loud, phone mics weren't designed for that hot a signal) it will sound like ass anyway. If you really want to record yourselves live and don't really care about quality then fine, use a phone. But otherwise, maybe see if you can use the engineers mixer out to record audio and then use a camera of some description to record video.

I've seen and heard many gigs recorded with a Zoom Q3. It looks pretty handy and I'm going to get one as soon as possible.

It still wouldn't sound as good as like one of those omnidirectional recording mics.

Board mixes always sound like @ss too. Especially in a smaller club, what you typically have running through the board is a ton of vocals, hardly any drums, a fair bit of bass, and a little bit of guitar. The rest of the balancing of the sound is done through the stage volume of the instruments.

To the TS: I wouldn't use a phone except for the odd "gee, I didn't bring anything to record with, let's grab this on the phone" moments.

One of my bands used a Zoom H2. Cheap, easy to use, and surprisingly excellent quality.

handy is one reason why i ask about cell phones with video. some video's on youtube come out pretty decent...at least i assume for the average ordinary non musician ears.

If you have an iPhone, a Blue Mikey, Tascam iM2 or Rode iXY might work. The IK iRig Mic works on Android or iOS, too. I have no idea what kind of quality they can produce, but I'd assume they far exceeds anything built into a phone

There's also the iRig Pre, which lets you use any microphone (including condensers, it has phantom power). I think that would have the most potential for quality, depending on what mic you get. A well placed condenser could get a fair recording.
