Fender trussrod looks flat

Hey UG, I'm having some problems with my stratocaster...
I'm trying to adjust my fender trussrod but it there's a problem..
doesn't really look like I can adjust it through the headstock, it looks flat.
Here's a picture: https://www.dropbox.com/s/djvlghii1...4%2054%2025.jpg

It's from 2009. I bought the neck from ebay.
It's not THIS auction but it's pretty much the same object I think. > Link

Thanks in advance!

You need a small socket/truss rod tool to fit the nut on the truss rod

That truss rod has a nut on the end not an Allen/hex key.

There is a nut on the truss rod (I can see it in the picture). I believe a 5/16" socket is what will work.
Do you have a small tool kit with scockets? Try them out and see if it works. worse case take it to a local shop and ask them if they have a truss rod key.

I basically don't have any tools except for the hex tool for my ESP guitar but that's about it. Stewmac told me it would be either a 1/8" or a 3/16" but I might order a 5/16" aswell.
Any links to the exact ones I need to order?
I don't really see how I'm gonna fit a socket tool into that small hole, could someone please explain this aswell?

Thanks for your answers!

trust me it will fit. Go to the hardware store and take your guitar. Try some nut drivers to see if they will fit and to get the correct size. They probably even have a T-handle nut driver and that is what you would want. It will be way cheaper than Stew Mac.

That looks exactly like the bog standard allen socket. Try the allen from your ESP, it might just work.

This ^

A nut driver / socket will do you no good. Get an allen key.

I've tried it but since it's all flat and by the logics of physics it won't turn because it doesn't catch on magically. The allen key ATTATCHES to the truss rod on my ESP, because it's not just flat.

All flat?

There is quite clearly an allen slot in the pic you posted. Not sure if that pic is actually of your guitar or not......

If it IS a pic of your guitar, then with the proper size allen you should have no problem.

that is a typical nut on the end of the truss rod. An allen wrench will not work. The guy that said you need a nut driver is right. get that from a hardware store. Bring the guitar in and try to see what size fits. Make sure to try both standard and metric sizes to avoid rounding off the nut corners.

Actually no, its not a nut. Its an allen adjustment just like it should be.

TS - I hope you don't mind me re-posting this pic

You need a 3/16" allen.

Fender recommends this one - http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender-...XGP&cagpspn=pla
But any 3/16 allen should do the trick.

This thread is getting out of hand. Too much misinformation.....

Seriously, it's an allen key. The one you've got right now might be a bit big which makes it feel flat. Go and poke something smaller around in there, you'll feel the hole.

Heck, buy yourself a whole allen wrench set. They can be had for <$20 for both metric and imperial wrenches. They're used everywhere, guitars, bikes, etc...

Thread starter - you say that it is flat at the top. With a straightened out paper clip, start in the center of the truss rod and work your way to the side. If you go from a depression in the middle to a higher point on the edge, you need an allen wrench. If you start from the center and it is either flat all the way to the edge of the truss rod end or even dips in, , you have a nut on the end of the truss rod bolt and need a nut driver.

I just looked at my squier neck and it looks nothing like what you have. There is the possibility that since you bought it on ebay, it may have been a factory second or otherwise repaired with a nut.
