hey guys, I talked it over with Kevin Saale and we decided to make a tone test thread.


come here to get your tone critiqued and you can get help with tone here.

so don't make a new thread just come here and post and we'll help

Yeah, if you feel there is something lacking in your sound then post a clip here and we'll try to add another brain into the mix. Maybe we'll hear something you're not hearing and it's all the difference.

Right. I hope I am doing this right.....

I own a Ibanez GSR200 (Cheap replacement bass). I am saving for an Ibanez SR505 or a 506 ( 5 string and 6 string ) but won't be able to get it until about 2009 or 2010 even.

My bass sounds a bit like:

(with tone down to 0 because it's crap on 10. No effects or EQ.).

The GSR bass has a Jazz style pickup and a presion style pickup, I only used the Jazz one in the recording on a flat EQ from a Fender Rumble 15 amp. No effects pedal. I do own a Boss: ME50 pedal however.

I use Ernie Ball slinky strings on medium gauge.

I dunno much about bass tone but it's sounds pretty good. It's a little bit I dunno farty that might be the mic breaking up though. try turning the bass down just a little ad the treble up just little

Might try that. My mic is one of those that boost's lower frequencies anyway which is painfully annoying. I just wanted to make it a bit less depressing sounding. Thanks.

What kind of speakers and sound cards do you guys have? It's hard to accurately critique someone's tone with your average computer speaker setup.

I would contribute to this thread, but I'm still running my onboard sound card through stock speakers. I'm planning on picking up a decent system at some point, but I'll probably wait until after the holidays.

its not bad on its own, but I think if it was recorded or used in a band situation it wouldn't be so hot.

it needs some midrange and treble, but that may be lacking from the tone control being set to 0

good tone, there isn't much else to say maybe it's a bit fuzzy but thats expected with a 5150. otherwise great tone man
