You give me far to much credit

What is still shocking to me is the fact that the clean channel even has a second gain stage. When Scott added a 4th preamp tube to 'improve the clean channel' then he must have added what we know as V1.

Hmm. Well I rolled through my tubes and realized that I only have 1 JJ left , I must've stuck the rest in the Mesa... And I've got a pile of vintage tubes missing the labels . I honestly have no idea what most of these are or where they came from, but they're almost all long greyplates and a few long blackplates.

V1: American Tung Sol
V2: JG5751 or JJ, both sound good
V3: Unknown greyplate, probably RCA
V4: Didn't mess with it, left the Mesa 12ax7-A in there

Notes: Didn't care for RCA 7025's anywhere in the amp, which is "the greatest sounding American made tube" by a lot of sources. The American Tung Sols didn't sound too great later in the amp, but in V1 it worked well. A modern Tung Sol worked pretty well in V3, I may stick it in there instead of the unknown greyplate.

This helped out a lot, but I'm still on the fence with it. I'm gonna play around with it more later to get a final verdict. I need to give my ears a break

EDIT: I need to order some JJs
EDITx2: Anyone know what a "12ax7a" Mesa is? They're not stamped "Russian" like the ones I've seen. So I'm guessing they're Chinese

Those (9th Gen Shuguangs) are recommended in Bogner's high-gainers: Uberschall and Twin Jet. Excellent in Mesas. Haven't tried them in my Diezels.

Flux'd - Those long blackplate tubes are most likely American made. To my knowledge there were very few European ECC83s with long blackplates, whereas up until the early 60s a large portion of American tubes had the blackplates. RCA, GE, Raytheon, Sylvania, Tung-Sol, Ken-Rad all made many of their tubes with the blackplates in that era.

As I mentioned earlier, I had an RCA in V3 for quite a while. I forget what's there now One thing I notice about your tube setup you have there; if you're looking for more saturation, using a 5751 in V2 normally won't do it. Myself, I would use that 5751 in V1. IMO the QR's clean channel really doesn't work as well with a 12ax7 in V1 as it does with a lower-gain tube there. I'm using a 12at7.

I'm starting to sound like a broken record here, but try that Mullard you have in V2.

One last thing: What speakers are you running your QR thru?

I'm running it through a V30 and G12H30. And I'll try that tube swap in a bit, right now I'm resting after devastating the dinner table one plate at a time

I spotted this the other day in the latest Guitar World magazine. This is the Holiday 2012 issue. It is short update on Killswitch Engage's upcoming album. It doesn't mention Splawn or Splawn amps being used nor is it powered on but it is sitting right frickin' there.

Pretty sure they used Splawn's on their last album with Howard and they are well known to have used Splawn's live on their last big tour. I dig their tone regardless of what they use so it will be interesting to see if Adam and Joel continue to use Splawn.

I've seen pics of them with 2 or 3 different Splawns now but this one I cannot place. It looks like a single channel like a Pro Mod maybe or Competition. All the others I've seen with them are dual channel Splawns. Anyone know? It has more of a JCM 800 type headshell too.

Could it be an old Splawn-modded Marshall?

Adam D's tone on his Times of Grace project w/Jesse Leach was veeeerry Splawn-y (if that's a word) It wouldn't surprise me a bit if he used one on that deal.

^ maybe

The control panel looks very Splawn like. Like I said I've seen there Nitros and QR so this tells me they now have another Splawn in the stable.

FWIW - I 'think' they may have used a Splawn in TOG too.

I had a look at some amp photos on Splawn's website and the control layout on that amp there looks a lot like a Super Comp, though it could also be a Pro Stock. From what I could tell the input jack and Power/Standby switches are too far away from the controls to be a Competition.

Yeah - you're right. It does look like a Super Comp panel.

I also checked under orderable options and now see a '800' headshell option that I forgot about.

Also, I checked out the Splawn Facebook page looking for more pics. I can't find the pics anymore but under music, Scott has listed KSE, Godsmack, Steve Stevens and Collective Soul - all Splawn users right now. That is pretty cool.

I'm back on the fence with the Splawn. Damn my indecisiveness

I'm playing it through a 2x12 loaded with a G12H30 and a V30, even with the treble and presence all the way down it is still a REALLY bright amp. That doesn't bother me as much as the bass however. It's really flabby and distorted sounding, even though the amp is tight. I've rolled the bass back quite a bit and it's still distorted as if the speakers can't handle it. But I know they can, because I ran the Trec with this cab and it had a lot more bass than the Splawn.

Signal Chain: Flying V (Gibson 500T) > Splawn (50W mode) > 2x12 (G12H30 & V30)

3rd Gear, OD2
Presence: 9 o'clock
Bass: 11
Middle: Noon
Treble: 7 (off)
Solo: 9
Volume: 10:30
Gain: 9

I'm open to all suggestions, as I want to love this amp. It's just not working out

I know i've got some JJs here somewhere, as soon as I find them I'll stick them in the amp. Right now it's loaded with mostly vintage American tubes of unknown manufacture. I know there's a USA Tung Sol in there and a JG5751

Hmmm, I'm not sure what to say about the bass. I don't think I've ever had that problem with mine. I could almost run my bass flat out before it became unusable. Of course I don't b/c I'm playing 7-strings mostly.

Here's my current settings:
Presence: 10:30
Bass: 9:30
Mid: 1:00
Treble: 11:00
Gain: 1:00-2:00
Gear 2/OD2
My cab is a Carvin Legacy 412 with Eminence/Splawn Small Blocks and Vintage 30s in an X pattern. It's a bright sound but pretty tight in the low end.

Could one of your speakers have gotten damaged in any way, or overloaded/blown? Unlikely, but it's something else to check in the name of thoroughness. Do you have access to some different cabs/speaker combinations to test it thru?

Are you still using the same preamp tube layout you posted a couple weeks ago? It could possibly be one of your preamp tubes is on its way out. You might try some more tube swapping to see what comes of it.

What power tubes are you using? And have you checked the bias? That makes a huge difference. I didn't know how sterile and flabby mine sounded when it was biased cold until I raised it to the 30-32mA range Splawn recommends. After that, it really woke up. The bass got tighter, the mids got fuller, and it was much richer and more complex harmonically.

Man, I hate that this isn't working out for ya. I guess I might be blinded to the fact that Splawns might be an acquired taste by how much I still dig mine

+1 to what is saying

JJs

Rebias?

tung sols way too bright

run solo vol a bit higher than channel vol.

V30s don't work to well with splawns period

had G12H30 and Classic 80 avatar 212 cab and it was a tad bass heavy

never flub tho

now running splawn 212 cab w Splawn Small Blocks. no flub

treble on 0

but yeah......it is a bright amp. makes u a better player

otherwise.....splawns are bright no doubt............

Try out the Swamp Thang/Texas Heat combo. It tamed the high end on my Laney.

American Tung Sol from the 60s, not the current production stuff . It's a very warm tube instead of being bright.

If I can get one of my multimeters working right I'll check the bias on the amp. And I'll try those settings and tweak them to my tastes. It's definitely a bright amp but I prefer bright amps, this one is wayyyyy out there haha. I may drag out my recording gear and get a couple clips for you guys.

Clips would be awesome

Just on a side note: up until last week I was trying a Small Block/G12T75 X pattern in my cab. I felt that it had too much bass. Both those speakers have plenty of low end on tap, so I swapped the T75s for V30s. Tighter bass, but way brighter. Maybe a G12T75 or something in that vein instead of the V30 might reign in the highs a bit? Not sure it'll help the flub though.

The treble control on the QR is...odd. It's almost like the highs never really disappear as you turn it down. Running it at 0 has just as much treble as running it at noon or higher, it's just a different voicing. I think the Presence control is really where you can affect the highs on those amps.
